A Roman day out

Form 4 thoroughly enjoyed themselves this week at Kent Life where they took part in a Roman day.

There were eight interactive sessions (and a quick tractor ride) where the children found out about many aspects of Roman and Celtic life.

They met a slave who explained what food rich and poor people would eat, and the children were keen to find out what happened if the slave disobeyed an order. Then a very strict centurion taught them how to make an effective tortoise formation. The enemy (teachers) had to attack the formation with weapons (soft plastic balls) to see how effective it was.

Next, they learnt about Roman technology and built a class road and aqueduct. With a bit of teamwork, the results were pretty impressive. Then they met a Celtic woman who taught them what life was like before the Romans invaded.

After lunch, Boudicca arrived with her impressive blue face paint. She taught the children Celtic war chants and how to make themselves look fierce in order to fight the Romans.

The final two workshops were very hands-on. The children found out how leather was made and that the Romans scratched graffiti into their walls. They got to have a go at stamping letters into their own piece of leather to make a protective amulet and produce their own graffiti on the walls.

It was a great day out and the children were all excited to share what they had learnt.
