Being kind and mindful

This week’s topics in Robins were Kindness, Mindfulness and Remembrance.

We started the week with a visit to the pop-up shop in the Old Hall. Our new Robin was very helpful and he helped to fill the shopping bags with lots of groceries. Once back in class, the children unpacked the shopping and placed everything on the counter.

It was a special day on Monday, and we spoke about Remembrance and why we celebrate it. I also read the story A Day to Remember and we spoke about the significance of Remembrance Day. We learnt some new words, such as courageous and brave and we made connections to superheroes.

As you know, we place a big emphasis on nature and to extend their interests, whilst linking to our topic, we watched a mindfulness Springwatch video. The children enjoyed listening to the sounds of nature and they were able to identify a variety of animals and birds.

It was also Kindness Week, so we spoke about being kind to each other and how we should do the right thing. It is very important to discuss emotions as young children can often not express or process them like us. Therefore, it is important to support and guide them with how to deal with their emotions and discuss how they make us feel. As an extension, the children made heart pictures using heart-shaped serviettes. The Robins also enjoyed scooping pasta into tins.

There was lots of creativity this week and the children enjoyed drawing and painting on the CTouch board. They enjoyed using the various tools to add colour and they thought the aeroplanes, sparkles and stars were great fun as they made lots of noise!

The Robins have certainly made the most of the new pirate ship climbing apparatus. It is great to see the enjoyment in their faces as they climb, explore and, of course, have fun! Unfortunately, the children told me that I was in the sea and as a result, one of the Robins pretended to be a shark and swam after me!

Our cooking activities consisted of banana cake, bread rolls and kindness brownies filled with extra chocolate…yummy!

As a special treat, the children enjoyed a hot chocolate on the rainbow-shaped bench after having fun in their all-in-one suits on the paddock.

Christmas has arrived in Robins and the children have made a great start, learning all their Christmas songs for the Christmas concert and tea party on Thursday 5th December. Don’t forget to save the date as lots of fun will be had with our festive activities.

A special envelope arrived on Thursday, which is linked to next week’s topic. The Robins are super excited to open the envelope on Monday as we might find some exciting resources linked to Road Safety.

The police visited us and explained about their roles and how they help people. The children liked looking at their uniform and afterwards, each child chose their favourite colour for their fingerprint. This was then added to the forensics tree.

It is currently on display in our class as a nice reminder of our exciting visit.

Next week’s topic is Road Safety. Perhaps your child might like to bring in something from home linked to our topic.
