Form 4 Rock Day

The children had been eagerly awaiting Rock Day this week and they certainly had a fantastic day.

They began by finding out about a range of different rocks and looking at their properties under a microscope. They then had to arrange them according to various criteria and try to remember ways to help them remember their names. There was just enough time before break to have a go at making their own sedimentary rock by washing small pieces of stone and sand (including Dave the dead dinosaur) down a river and into the sea.

After break, they looked more closely at a range of fossils and then had a go at recreating one using a plasticine mould and a small amount of plaster. They enjoyed wearing their safety goggles and took care to mix the plaster carefully. They were also excited to take their models home as a souvenir of the day.

In the afternoon, they made metamorphic rock by heating wax over a candle and then adding pressure as it was cooling. There was also a great deal of excitement when they ended the day with a volcano competition. Almost all of their volcanoes erupted with squeals of delight as the lids popped off the canisters.
