Hibernation fascination
04 Oct 2024It’s been a week of hibernation fascination this week in Transition!
As the weather has felt very autumnal this week, we have turned our attention to thinking about animals that hibernate. We did some research to find out which animals hibernate and which do not.
We were also interested to find out where animals hibernate. Some make a nest of leaves, whilst others find caves or wet mud to settle down for the winter.
Once the weather dried up, we set out around the school to collect leaves and twigs to create a hibernation home for a hedgehog and a dormouse.
We are very excited to show all of the grownups our knowledge of hibernation in our upcoming Coffee Morning!
We have read lots of lovely stories about hibernation this week including Go Home Little One and The Big Dreaming. The children have enjoyed creating a hedgehog by printing using a fork to create the spikes, playing a hedgehog counting board game and creating our very own clay hedgehogs! We practised our listening skills when we played a game Bears Like Honey.
We made the most of our time in the Hub this week, having a lovely discussion continuing our learning about when and why some animals hibernate. We then enjoyed some quiet exploration of the books in the library. It felt very cosy reading in the warmth!
Wednesday was a very exciting day as it was Transition’s turn to do an assembly. We enjoyed sharing all of our work on Weather and Seasons and our ten little raindrops song was a big hit with pre-prep! It was a little daunting to stand up in front of all of the Pre-Prep but all of the Transition children did very well!
To mark environmental week this week, Mrs Nelson very kindly bought a compost bag and explained how she creates compost at her home. We have been busy collecting any banana peels/ oranges from our snack to help. We also thought about why we have a recycling bin in the classroom, and used some recycling to create fantastic junk modelling creations! We spoke about how we should always turn off our C-Touch board, lights in the classroom and taps when we are not using them to save electricity and water.
Our letter sound this week was e. It was very tricky to think of words beginning with the e sound, but we came up with elephant, egg and engine! The older children continue to thoroughly enjoy their phonics lessons with Mrs Cooper and come back full of excitement about the letter they have been practising that day! There was lots of laughter in Transition as Mrs Nelson played Silly Soup with the younger children. There was lots of speedy singing and stirring as the children looked for the objects beginning with the sound Mrs Nelson said!
