In space and on earth
11 Oct 2024We've had such a fun week with cheeky aliens and Evil Peas, and also a very special bundt cake.
This week’s topics in Russell Robins were Harvest and Space. There were lots of strange happenings over the week due to the Evil Pea and cheeky aliens! On Monday, we took part in a whole school Harvest Festival Rehearsal. It was wonderful to hear all the different classes sing. Afterwards, we walked to the Old Hall to collect our shopping at the Pop-up Shop. The children carefully packed our items into the shopping bags. On return to class, the Robins emptied the shopping bags and they popped all the groceries onto the counter.
Once back in class, the children enjoyed exploring our farm shop role-play. They thoroughly enjoyed using my antique shop weighing scales. Each item was carefully weighed and popped into their shopping bags. This activity led to lots of interest in numbers so we will further extend on this next week.
We have some exciting news… there are now two squirrels that visit our feeding station and it was great to see Cyril and Myril doing good sharing as they ate the seed together. The children very much enjoyed looking out of the window and they are always very keen to share whether they have seen a bird or squirrel. We certainly are very lucky to have this much nature on our doorstep!
The Robins were able to identify different types of food during our Talk for Learning activity and we used some of these to print with paint which was fun. We also discussed Harvest and we spoke about how this is the time of year when we celebrate gathering crops from the land and the process of how food gets from the farms to our table. To extend our learning, we watched Down on the Farm at Harvest Time. The children also made connections to our Harvest songs.
As part of our topic, we shared one of our favourite stories… Supertato! Unfortunately, after reading the story, we discovered some Evil Peas had escaped from our freezer. The Robins used their super strength and super speed to capture the missing peas. They were then put back into the icy depths of the freezer. Well done, Robins!
I was very proud of how well the Robins sat during the Harvest Festival and it was great to see their confidence shine through whilst they were on stage.
One of our Robins enjoyed wearing an astronaut costume as part of our topic and it was great to see many topic-related items during Show and Tell. In particular, lots of fun was had on Thursday when the children came into class… aliens had landed in Robins! Unfortunately, our class was part of a crime scene as the aliens had eaten a pack of biscuits and a banana. The cheeky aliens left crumbs and a banana skin on the floor. The children used their detective skills and magnifying glasses to work out that the aliens were green and red as they had left alien slime footprints all over the floor!
Continuing with our topic, we made a yummy pumpkin bundt cake on Thursday. The children enjoyed mixing all the ingredients and we also made a special cake delivery to Mrs Tickner, Mrs Parker and Mr McCarthy. They were all thrilled with their cakes and we hope you managed to have a little taste, too. The Robins also enjoyed making bread rolls with a couple of their Form 6 friends. It’s wonderful to have the older children visit us and I think they are all turning into crumpet and toast monsters!
In true Robins style we explored the school grounds and enjoyed a nice hot chocolate and slice of pumpkin cake whilst looking at the lovely views across the North Downs.
There might be a special delivery planned next week which should hopefully arrive in time for lots of spooktacular fun. I’ll give you a couple of clues… he lives in a dark, dark cellar.
Next week’s topics are Autumn, LeafMan and Halloween. Perhaps your child might like to bring in something linked to our topic. There are lots of fun activities planned so all the children should have a spooktacular time!
Have a lovely weekend.
