Many sparkly moments

This week’s topics in Russell Robins were Diwali and Fireworks.

We started the week with a visit to our pop up grocery shop in the Old Hall. The children listened very well to the instructions and they each carefully chose an item of shopping to go in the school bags. Once back in class, it was great to see the children helping with putting the shopping on the counter.

The Robins thoroughly enjoyed their sensory PE circuit in the Russell Hall on Tuesday. Lots of fun was had as they negotiated space and explored the low-level apparatus independently. The children thoroughly enjoyed jumping on the mat and swimming across to the finish. Once completed, each child remembered to safely go back to the beginning and repeat the circuit.

As a surprise, we took the children to our new pirate ship outdoor climbing area. They explored the different areas and used the wheel to steer the pirate ship.

Our cooking activities consisted of edible sparklers, bread rolls and sparkly mousse. The children must have missed our baking activities as one of our Robins asked if we were baking on the first day back at school. The children learn many skills during our cooking activities and most importantly, they have fun!

As part of our topic we explored a firework-themed sensory tray and the children enjoyed making marks with their paint brushes. During snack time, we took part in the Skittle Experiment. I explained that we needed to make a repeating pattern using the different coloured Skittles. The children waited patiently as I slowly added hot water to make the colours drain away from the Skittles. The Robins were able to explain the water was hot as they saw steam rising from the jug.

The colours of the Skittles reminded us of fireworks and Diwali. We also watched a Diwali video on the CTouch and afterwards we watched some fireworks.

It was our turn to host the Pre-Prep assembly this week and I must say how extremely proud I am. They were super confident and they thoroughly enjoyed singing to all their friends and teachers. Well done, Robins!

Mr McCarthy popped in on Thursday to read to the Robins. The children sat very well and they enjoyed finding Rusty’s bone. He was impressed with their enthusiasm and good listening skills.

Afterwards, we changed into our wellies and explored the school grounds, stopping for a hot chocolate in the Outdoor Classroom. On the way back to class, we had lots of fun throwing leaves in the air. Autumn is definitely our favourite season, especially as it is so pretty.

Cyril the Squirrel returned this week and the Robins were thrilled to spot him on the feeding station behind our class. There was also a friendly robin (the feathery kind) pecking away at the seed feeder.

On Thursday, we wiggled and jiggled as we made marks to the music whilst taking part in our scrimbling activity. Stickers were also added to make their pictures extra special. Again, this is a great pre-writing activity for our little ones.

Next week’s topics are Being Kind, Mindfulness and Remembrance. Perhaps your child might like to bring in something from home linked to our topics. Please remember to send in a donation, should your child like to purchase a poppy or another Remembrance-related item from Mrs Tickner’s Office.
