Rising to the challenge
14 Jun 2024The Form 7 journalists report on the week.
On Wednesday we had Inter-House Maths. We split into our houses and had to complete the puzzles we were given. On some puzzles, we had to find out what different operations we had to do to make certain numbers with our options. Let's say that we have to make 480 with the numbers 4,100,5,3,10; we would first times 4 by 100 to make 400, then we would have to add 5 and 3 to make 8, then times it by 10 to make 80, and we would end up with 480. The calculation would look like this: (4x100)+(5+3)x10. We also had to find out how many animals would add up to equal the amount that a farmer had. If we had to make 60 with two amounts of animals, we could have 32 sheep with 28 rabbits or 42 cows with 18 chickens. It was great fun and the winners of the class and whole school competitions will be announced next week.
On Tuesday, Mia, Aimee, Lucy and Anders competed in the semi-finals of the Quiz Club’s National Mathematics Championship. We finished 52nd place. Although this seems quite low, we were very proud to have made the semi-finals. There were three rounds of ten questions each, which would become increasingly harder, until the last 5 questions which were the hardest. To accommodate the increase in difficulty, with each round, you would get more time to answer and more points for each question. You started with ten points for each question, then 60 and finally 100 points. You had 20 seconds to answer, then 30 and finally 60. The top five finishers qualified automatically for the national finals in Oxford and the others would get emailed later in the day if they qualified. Although we didn’t qualify, we tried our hardest and found it very fun.
Our congratulations go to Nightingale for their resounding victory in the swimming gala last week. They were deserved winners and swam brilliantly throughout. I would also like to take this chance to remind children and parents that Form 7 should have their costumes in school ready for rehearsals on Monday.
