Road safety

This week’s topic in Russell Robins was Road Safety.

Wow, what an amazing and very busy week it has been. It was that time of the year when we learned about a very important topic of staying safe near roads. Each year, Brake runs a safety campaign to raise awareness. The Robins thoroughly enjoyed taking part in all our road safety activities.

On Monday, the children were super excited to open a special package from Brake. Once opened, the children revealed some posters, stickers and information cards.

I must say, the children have absorbed all the key pieces of information and they remembered to:

stop 🛑...look 👀 ...and listen 👂

Plus, when crossing roads, it is important to always hold a grown-up's hand. Perhaps, ask your children and see if they can remember. We place a big emphasis on working in partnership with parents. Therefore, if you would like to further extend on this week’s topic at home, then please visit https://www.brake.org.uk/zebras where you can find some further activities to do together.

Lots of fun was had exploring colour and sorting objects into traffic light colours. You may notice that most of this week’s activities consisted of the colours red, amber and green. The Robins were also able to use tweezers to pick-up buttons and pom-poms.

The children love numbers and counting. Never missing a learning opportunity, we count a variety of objects, ranging from bookbags to visual timetable photos. Although, I must admit, I try to trick the children but they are just too clever! This week, I introduced Numicon and we carefully counted the number of holes/ circles. The Robins did a great job of finding the correct amount of objects during free-play.

This week’s cooking activities consisted of bread rolls, beep beep sandwiches and ready steady go pizzas. The Robins love cooking and it provides a wealth of knowledge, whilst supporting motor development and fundamental life skills. The children carefully chopped peppers which were later used as toppings for their pizzas.

The bird watching station has been extremely busy and there has been lots of activity outside our window. In fact, we spotted blue tits, wood pigeons, magpies and robins. Oh, and of course, Cyril the Squirrel.

The children have been very creative this week and also quite messy. They enjoyed pushing cars through paint and they had lots of fun mark-making as they zoomed around spreading lots of paint on the paper. The Robins were thrilled with the end result. Well done!

It was quite chilly this week, so we enjoyed a yummy hot chocolate inside whilst watching a mindfulness video. This was a great treat for the children as they also had the option of having squirty cream on top… yummy!

You may notice that each week the children participate in many of the same activities. Repetition is such an important aspect of how children learn, as it increases the children’s confidence as well as strengthens the connections in their brain. This helps them to make connections between words and objects.

I am super excited for our Christmas Concert which is fast approaching and it won’t be long until we are joined by our Christmas friend, Elvis the Elf. Elvis is always very impressed with the children’s behaviour when he visits as he likes it when children do the right thing.

Next week’s topic is Hibernation. Perhaps your child might like to bring in something from home linked to our topic.
