We're going on a bear hunt
20 Sep 2024It has been another wonderful week in Nursery with the children sharing their learning with us. We have all enjoyed our story this week of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt with some amazing recall of the vocabulary and sequencing of the story.
During the story, we had lots of conversations about our pets which has been so lovely to hear. The children have shared stories of swimming dogs (and cats!) and news of a new aquarium being built too. It is always so lovely for us to listen to the children’s conversations and learn to take turns with each other by patiently waiting their turn. There has also been a lot of empathy shown by the children at the end of the story when they say that the bear is sad and lonely, and we all agreed that we would be friends with the bear.
The children were fantastic at making a Bear Hunt storyboard by exploring different media to represent each event of the story. By using the book as a reference, the children were confident to talk about what was happening and talk about the swishy swashy grass, the squelchy mud and the big dark cave.
The children have even made their own binoculars to go hunting for bears... and also dinosaurs, superheroes and monsters. The binoculars are part of our story display which we hope you enjoy seeing in the photos.
The gloop has been very popular this week with lots of scooping and pouring with hands and spoons to cover the small coloured bears. There has been lots of estimating and calculating of how many bears will fit into each pot and then how much gloop is needed to cover the bears. The children have also been making us delicious food with the gloop such as hot dogs, strawberry cake and sauce and mud pasta.
It was such good fun on Wednesday when the children took off their shoes and socks and walked through the squelchy mud (brown paint) just like the family in our story. There was a lot of squelching and squerching as the children walked along the paper making footprints. They did so well as it was very slippery in the paint, and they did a super job of washing the paint off their feet in the warm bubbly water. The children loved being bears when we took a photo of them with their footprints. Apologies if some of their feet were still a little brown! We will use the footprints to make something special with them in December!
After making a storyboard based on our story, the children made their very own Bear Hunt books! They carefully looked at each of the pictures and by using their thinking skills, they were able to put the pictures in the correct order - fantastic sequencing! These too will be on our Bear Hunt display in Nursery.
