The science of music

This week, Form 6 have been learning about the science of music.

They explored ideas of how they could use lab equipment to make musical instruments, which could play notes of different pitch and amplitude. Thereafter, they made an octave of panpipes with test tubes by incrementally increasing volumes of water.

Having achieved pitch perfection, the pupils were then asked to measure the column of air above the water in each test tube to see if there is a correlation between this height and the pitch made. This will be further explored as we explore other musical instruments and how notes of different pitch are achieved on those.
