A doughy, fun week

Our topics this week in Robins were Book Week, St David’s Day and Wildlife Day. We have certainly had a very busy week.

The children were amazed on Monday as they found the cheeky dinosaurs playing on the table. The strange thing was, the dinosaurs were wearing underpants! We enjoyed watching the story on our CTOUCH board and the children were able to correctly name some of the dinosaurs. Continuing with our dinosaur theme, we made yummy dinosaur cakes with sprinkles on top.

There was lots of doughy fun during our bread making activity. The Robins enjoyed making marks in the flour and then the children watched as I modelled what we were going to do. Each child carefully rolled their dough in the flour and then we held it up high and dropped it. It made a big SPLAT sound as it dropped onto the table and the Robins thoroughly enjoyed listening to the noises. We decided to make hedgehogs after finding one on our Talk for Learning poster of Percy the Park Keeper. The children carefully used forks to create spikes and they then added sultanas for the eyes. We made a fresh bread delivery to Mrs Tickner and Mrs Parker. They were thrilled with their spiky rolls, as they were still warm.

Tuesday afternoon we decided to go for a walk around the school grounds to collect some rosemary. We washed the rosemary and used it as the special ingredient for our scones. As a group, we mixed the ingredients to make a ball. Afterwards, each child used their rolling pin to make the dough nice and flat, before deciding which cutter to use. The most popular shape was the love heart. I made lots of extra mini scones so as a special treat, we tried some for our snack. Everyone thought they were… delicious!

Mr McCarthy popped into Robins on Wednesday to read us some stories. The Robins enjoyed it so much, they asked for a third story. The children sat beautifully and they enjoyed finding the animals from the Dear Zoo story. Continuing with our topic, we spoke about our favourite animals on our wildlife poster. One of the Robins made a connection to our Dear Zoo story, which was great.

On Thursday it was World Book Day and it was lovely to see such an array of costumes. Have you ever seen a dinosaur gardening? Well, the Robins (dressed in their costumes) helped to plant some Muscari in our new planter which is located just outside Robins. We thought it would be nice for the pollinators and they will also look so pretty on our arrival to class. Mr Phil also made us an extra planter for our lovely spring daffodils.

We finished the week with a fun book-themed scavenger hunt as part of our Book Week activities. Lots of fun was had and it was great to see the children working as a team.
