A wonderful week of learning

This week in Form 1 the children have had a wonderful time learning all about recycling fabric.

We read the story Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback which follows the story of Joseph who resourcefully turned a tatty old coat onto something new. The children made their own little versions of the book by sequenced the story using pictures. They then wrote sentences to accompany each page.

This story linked perfectly to their latest recycling project; sock puppets! All the children bought some odd socks into school and had lots of fun turning them into all sorts of different characters. The children thought about the materials they wanted to use and the features to include for their puppet. We had dogs, parrots, cats, tigers, dinosaurs, a crab, spiders, monsters and even a carrot!

In maths this week, we have been learning all about halves and quarters. The children worked hard to halve their 2D shapes, making sure that both parts were equal. They even challenged themselves to find halves of shapes that were divided into quarters and eighths and find different ways to do this.

On Wednesday, the children presented their assembly to the rest of Pre-Prep and shared what they had learnt all about the 3 Rs; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The children shared the projects they have been working on over the last few weeks and explained clearly to everyone how important it is to help the environment. They proudly showed their cardboard box houses, paper bag trees, the rot pots created to make their own compost and their wonderful sock puppets. The children spoke clearly and read their words beautifully. We sang a song about the 3R’s and then everyone loved having a little boogie to a fun rap about all the things you can recycle. This linked perfectly with Environmental Awareness Week and the children were very proud of their work.

On Thursday, the children were very excited when Mrs Carn came to tell us she had spotted a dragonfly that was in the molt stage of its life cycle. We hurried to the pond to see if we could watch this amazing moment. We arrived as the dragonfly was just emerging and the children were fascinated seeing this process in action. We checked on the dragonfly later that morning to find it had already shed its exoskeleton and taken flight.

We returned to the classroom and watched a timelapse video of the entire process and the children were full of questions. We then watched a short information film all about the lifecycle of a dragonfly and drew some pictures of what we had just seen.

Lots of fun was had on Friday when we all came to school in our cosy pyjamas for Pajamarama Day! Everyone agreed it was really funny not being in our uniform and a great way to end a very busy week.
