The buzzing bees
19 May 2023Our topic this week in Robins was Environmental Awareness.
The children thoroughly enjoyed learning about how we can be sustainable, through building environmental understanding. To help us understand, we had a special visitor called Buzz. Bees play a very important role in the maintenance of biodiversity. They transport pollen from flower to flower which impacts the variety of insects and animals in a given ecosystem. We have enjoyed watching the bees buzzing around our beautiful plants and trees. The Robins are lucky to explore and enjoy such wonderful surroundings.
There has also been a focus on eating a variety of fruit and vegetables. They help to form a sustainable diet and they tend to have a lower environmental impact than animal-based foods. With this in mind, the Robins made yummy kebabs. They carefully threaded a variety of fruit and vegetables onto wooden skewers. It was wonderful to see the children persevere as some of the vegetables were quite tricky.
Last week’s chopping activity was a great success, so we extended this week by using more challenging foods. The Robins did such a good job of chopping peppers and cutting/ snipping spring onions to make a delicious soup.
The Robins decided to do their own scrimbling this week, during free-play. It was wonderful to hear them repeating some of my key phrases and actions during their creative fun. Of course, it would not be scrimbling without music, so we listened to the song Happy.
Continuing with the mark-making theme, we made bread rolls and lots of fun was had, making marks in the flour. We made a delivery to Mrs Tickner, Mrs Parker and Mr McCarthy.
During carpet time we spoke about recycling and looked at the symbol on our bin. We explored the different materials/ objects and decided whether they should go into the following groups: plastic, paper and tin cans. To further extend their understanding, we watched a video on our CTOUCH and they all did such a fantastic job of sorting the rubbish.
There has been lots of water fun this week and it was great to see the children exploring water at different levels. There was lots of problem-solving and teamwork… well done, Robins!
Our topic next week is People Who Help Us. The Robins are thoroughly enjoying looking after their babies at the moment, so I think they will like our special visitor who will be popping in to say hello.
