Sun awareness and mindfulness

This week’s topics in Russell Robins were Sun Awareness and Mindfulness.

The week started with a visit to the pop-up shop in the Old Hall. The Robins all worked together to collect our groceries and each child collected an item and popped it inside the reusable bag.

With our Pre-Prep Coffee Morning fast approaching, we started to make a big volcano to use as part of our props. The children are enjoying learning the song and its actions to support this popular book but with a dinosaur twist! Dinosaurs are certainly a very popular interest at present and they providing lots of meaningful and child-led exploration opportunities. I hope the children have shared some of their wonderful singing with you at home, along with their stomping feet.

As part of our topic, we spoke about the sun and how to stay safe during our Talk for Learning activities. The children were able to identify the different pictures and they were able to make links in class. For example, one of the Robins told us that sun lotion protects their skin in the sun. We spoke about the importance of sun hats and as they protect our heads and faces. Drinking lots of water is also very important as it keeps us hydrated. Miss Ruby and I are always very happy with the amount of water the children drink during the session as they access their water bottles freely which are located at the Hydration Station.

During snack time, we shared news from the children’s Home/School Journals. It is always so lovely to see news linking to our weekly topics and also the interests of the children. For example, one of our Robins has enjoyed singing our Coffee Morning song at home, so during the weekend he chose a special outfit (dinosaur explorer) with his parents to support his learning and interests.

As a special treat, I showed the children last week’s bulletin video clip on our class CTouch. This promoted lots of language and they repeated the words. I hope you are all enjoying the videos as it provides a little deeper insight into our day and, of course, it can aid as an extra communication and language tool.

Following on with our topics, we took part in a yoga session in the Russell Hall as the weather was a little unpredictable this week. The children enjoyed moving around into different poses and they jumped like a frog, stretched like a cat and moved like a dog.

Traditional games are so much fun and even our helper from Form 6 took part in Duck, Duck, Goose. First, I demonstrated how to play the game and then the children took turns. However, there was a little confusion and we ended up with three geese, followed by much laughter.

The Robins enjoy being part of the whole school community and at every opportunity, we spend time with the older children. Whilst having a picnic in the outdoor classroom, Form 6 joined us whilst they sheltered from the rain.

Our outdoor learning activities consisted of walking through the woods, climbing trees and running around the field. We also watched cricket on the field against another school.

Our cooking activities consisted of orange drizzle cake, cheese on toast (the sun), pizza tarts, bread rolls and cheese scones.

Thank you once again for your continued support with our weekly topics. It is truly wonderful to receive such a great level of parental support as it extends the children’s learning.

Next week, our topics will be People Who Help Us. We encourage children to bring in something from home (just not too big please). This can be related to our weekly topic or anything else they would like to share or celebrate with us. The children enjoy sharing their objects from home during carpet time and it is a fantastic way to build effective communication and listening skills.
