Super shapes
27 Sep 2024This week’s theme in Transition has been Shapes. We enjoyed listening to a shape song on Monday and discussing the properties of a circle, square, rectangle and triangle.
It was especially difficult to think about what the difference is between a square and a rectangle as both have four sides and four corners. We realised, however, that the sides of a square are all the same in length. The children listened and watched Miss Keeling draw the shapes on the board before then having a go at drawing the shapes on their whiteboards. I was amazed by how well the children were able to draw each shape and their concentration was fantastic. We all found that a circle was the easiest shape to draw, but a hexagon was the hardest... Miss Keeling also struggled with this one!
We enjoyed getting out and about around the school grounds this week, both to play a Shape Sort game and to go on a Shape Hunt. During the shape sorting game, the children had to collect up the shapes hidden around the outdoor area and sort them into the correct pile! Mrs Nelson made it very tricky with some sneaky hiding places under pans and under tables!
On our Shape Hunt, the children were very excited to spot lots of circles, squares and rectangles around the school, disguised as drain covers, bricks, doors and signs! We noticed that triangles were much harder to find, however we did manage to spot a few hidden within things. We realised that shapes are everywhere and some children continued to spot shapes around the Transition classroom and outdoor area.
We have enjoyed playing a game called I’m thinking of shape. The children listened carefully to the clues given by Miss Keeling or Mrs Nelson to guess which shape it was that they were describing! Transition has been filled with lots of laughter as we have been creating Silly Pet Shapes. Using a shape, the children added on hair, eyes, legs, tails, teeth (whatever they would like) to create a silly pet!
We have been having lots of shape fun this week in our play including tracing around shapes, creating pictures from shape magnets, playdough shapes, shape printing and tap-a-shape.We have also been exploring gloop, building some brilliant train tracks, role playing in the vets corner and using stickers to create pictures!
Our letter sound this week was c. This is a tricky sound as there are two ways of making the sound; a c and a k! This meant that the children had double the work to do during our letter sound session, but nevertheless showed fantastic perseverance and concentration to try their very best.
On Thursday, we enjoyed Modern Foreign Language Day. We enjoyed talking about the different countries that the children had come dressed as and discussed how people may look different, speak a different language or wear different clothes and how our differences are what make us brilliant! We created a paper chain of people to show this idea! After listening to a song all about different ways to say hello, we had a try at saying hello in different languages. Perhaps you can see if your child can remember a different way to say hello!
