How we stay fit

This week’s topic in Russell Robins was Staying Fit.

We have certainly been busy bees… or should that be busy Robins! On Monday, we made the most of the wet weather by changing into our wellies to explore the grounds. Lots of fun was had splashing in muddy puddles. Afterwards, we chased bubbles around the school field and then stopped to see the sheep.

The children have been very active and they liked collecting apples from the tree on the Paddock. I used my special apple grabber to safely remove them from the branches and once I had picked enough, the Robins collected them all from the grass. I must say, they waited very patiently until they were instructed to gather them up.

Our cooking activities consisted of banana cake, apple and cinnamon cake, bread rolls and vegetable soup. It was great to see the children chop a variety of vegetables to make a fit and healthy soup. They have mastered the use of knives and they remembered to hold and support the vegetables with one hand and chop using the other hand. Well done, Robins!

As you know, I place a huge emphasis on nature and growing in Robins. As a class, we are proud of our Herb Garden and growing patch. Therefore, back in June I entered the Coolings School Garden Competition and I am pleased to share that we came third. We were lucky to receive a voucher, which was used to buy some new plants and a bird feeder for our feeding station. Cyril the squirrel made an appearance, but unfortunately he had broken our suet feeder… cheeky Cyril! The blue tits approve of our new blue feeder.

Following on with our topic, the Robins thoroughly enjoyed the low-level sensory circuit in the Russell Hall. The children did such a great job of listening to instructions and they remembered to walk around the outside of the circuit and navigate their way back to the beginning.

Our whole school Harvest Festival is soon approaching so we have been busy practising our songs with Miss Norford. The Robins have also enjoyed singing Dingle Dangle Scarecrow in their music sessions and they thoroughly liked doing the actions. The children love music so much and it is great to see the enjoyment on their faces.

On Wednesday we had a disco in class and the children wiggled and jiggled as they took part in our scrimbling activities. It was so wonderful to see our new Robin dancing and jiggling away to the music whilst mark-making… who says learning can’t be fun?!

It was Languages Day on Thursday and it was lovely to see the children wear different colours to represent a country of their choice. As a special treat, we tried brioche during our snack and they were certainly enjoyed by all the Robins…and myself and Mrs Saviou!

The CTouch was used to mark-make and we further extended our understanding of staying fit by watching Sid the Science Kid. In fact, it was quite similar to our scrimbling activity as there was lots of moving involved.

Carrying on with our topic, the Robins were able to identify 10 activities from the Happy Tiny People poster. This activity was great for promoting communication and language and we were also able to identify activities which would help us to stay fit… like football.

There was a special treat on Thursday afternoon as the Robins enjoyed some of their homemade soup during snack time. The children liked dipping their toasty soldiers and there were lots of empty bowls.

Lastly, I must say how much I love looking at your Home/ School Journals. It is lovely to share these resources during snack time and it has been wonderful to see the children planting the seeds and using the apples which we sent home. There have also been some lovely photos of the children taking part in their Busy Box activities. It is great to hear how much the children enjoy them.

Next week’s topic is Environmental Awareness Week. Perhaps your child might like to bring in something linked to our topic. We would welcome any clean packaging, such as cereal boxes which could be reused in our home corner to support imaginary play.
