A super week!
16 May 2025We started the week off by reading one of Julia Donaldson’s most popular stories, Superworm!
It was a great opportunity to explore rhyme, as the children finished off the sentence by guessing the rhyming words. After the story, some children chose to make their own superworm using playdoh, while others explored the spaghetti worms outside. There were short worms, long worms, thin worms, fat worms, wiggly worms and sleepy worms, and all of them were super!
Later that morning, we watched a video about ordinary children with extraordinary powers that they used to make the world a happier place. We had a lovely discussion about our own superpowers and I observed super listening from all the children! Then, everyone took it in turns to put on a cape and shared their superpower with the rest of the class. It was so encouraging to hear them talk so positively about themselves and wonderful that they recognise qualities such as kindness, sharing and patience as real superpowers. To remind them of their superpower, Transition made a lolly stick superhero. The children had to carefully cut out a cape and a mask for their superhero, then add googly eyes (for x-ray vision) and finish off by writing a super big s. They look wonderful on our display board outside our classroom.
On Tuesday, we looked at some pictures of real life heroes including police officers, firefighters and paramedics. We discussed how they help people and animals in need and keep us safe. We also discussed how they need to be fit and healthy to do their jobs and how exercise can help them achieve that goal. Transition thought it would be a good idea to take part in some superhero training of our own so we headed out to the front court. The children had a number of challenges to complete including running in and out of cones, hopping in, around and through a hula hoop and catching a ball in a cup. Everyone tried their best and most importantly, had lots of fun. You’ll be pleased to know that all the children passed with flying colours!
In maths this week, we have been learning about doubles. We learnt a really catchy song to help us remember our doubles to ten, and have been singing it at the start of every day. We also used a special doubling machine to help us work out the answers, which was really helpful and double the fun!
Our letter sound this week was p. I was astonished at the amount of words the children came up with and how creative they were with their thinking. Everyone was very focussed during the lesson and I was impressed that nearly everyone remembered to use their super fingers when holding their pencil.
What a treat we had on Thursday as not only did we get to travel in the Russell House minibuses, but we also got to go to Little Street! The children got to try out lots of different jobs such as builders, restaurant owners, hairdressers, rock stars, vets and firefighters. They also got to dress up in their favourite costumes; it’s not often you see Batman in the supermarket or a lion driving a fire engine, but anything is possible at Little Street!
They have also been busy rescuing baby bears from a laser maze (using tweezers), making superhero masks, working as the emergency services to solve crimes, building roads for the emergency vehicles to travel on and tending to our courgette and beetroot plants, which are growing bigger every day!
