Pedalling with purpose
Headmaster's column from the Russell House Magazine Spring Term 2026 edition.

Earlier this term, the staff pulled together for the first of our charity adventures. Working in a school often feels like a charity cycle: an exhilarating journey where the effort we invest individually fuels a much greater, common good.
Just as a cyclist finds their rhythm on the road, our pupils learn that progress requires balance, endurance, and a clear sense of direction. On our charity ride, we didn’t just pedal for ourselves; we pedalled for the person before us, after us and the cause ahead of us.
This spirit of service through stamina defines the Russell House experience. Whether it’s mastering a complex equation or navigating social dynamics, our pupils understand that every rotation of the pedals builds the strength needed to tackle the steeper hills of life.
The metaphor truly comes alive in our community spirit. There are no solo riders here; we operate as a peloton, where the older pupils catch the wind for the younger ones, and the encouragement from the roadside, our dedicated staff and parents, keeps everyone moving forward. By the time a Russell House pupil reaches their destination, they haven’t just covered the distance; they’ve learned that the greatest reward isn't the finish line, but the positive impact they’ve made along the way. Bring on Ben Nevis!
