Fly like an eagle

On Friday, Form 1 had a very exciting trip to Eagle Heights!

The children loved learning about a variety of animals and were keen to find out which continent they came from. The children were excited about travelling by coach (which was a brand-new experience for some) and, of course, taking a packed lunch was also very exciting. The children met a huge variety of birds from the great grey owl called Nanook from North America and Asia to the marabou stork from Africa. The children also saw some cheeky Kunekune piglets from New Zealand, meerkats from Africa, llamas from South America and some rare Blacknose sheep from Switzerland.

The weather was beautiful, so the children enjoyed a picnic outside looking over the lovely views across Eynsford. They were fantastic at listening and answering questions during the flying display where they learnt about barn owls and little owls. The Eagle Heights staff were astounded at their knowledge and confidence.

The children have continued to work on their Amazing Animals fact books in literacy and write about animals from different continents. They have learnt how to label their drawings and think about each animal's diet.

The children have continued making their habitats in art and have made animals out of clay to add to them. They chose to make penguins, foxes, komodo dragons, hedgehogs, camels, and snow leopards. They all look really great and the children have had lots of fun working on this project.

In maths, the children have been learning about sharing amounts equally between two and exploring odd and even numbers. The children learnt the strategy of sharing objects one at a time between two and checking that they both had an equal amount. When we share it is always fair reminded the children that this was very important. We discussed that it is not always possible to share equally between two and that this is called an odd number. Looking at the number pattern and learning more about place value has helped the children spot if a number will be odd or even. Using the large class 100 square, the children were able to think about some really big numbers!

On Thursday, Form 1 presented their work on animals to the rest of the Pre-Prep. Everyone was able to share something that they had learnt and they proudly showed their books, habitats and art work. The children used big voices when speaking and shared their impressive knowledge. They loved sharing their special continent's song! The children also enjoyed telling everyone about their trip to Eagle Heights and the animals they had seen.

The week has also been about a lot of playing outside and choosing activities independently in the classroom.  Another wonderful week in Form 1!
