Happy and confident

We warmly welcome all the children and parents back to Russell House after a restful Easter break. It has been lovely greeting the children (who are all brimming with excitement) back into school. The new children who have joined us from Nursery all look incredibly smart in their uniforms and everyone is ready to participate in the excitement of the Summer Term.

The focus for our week has been ensuring that we are all happy, settled and confident in our new surroundings. Everyone has done a fantastic job at settling into the new routines of the day and following instructions given. The older children have taken much pleasure in supporting our new classmates and offering a helping hand when needed. The addition of our brand new outside canopy has provided us with ample opportunities to play outside regardless of the weather. In true British fashion we have had a week of various weathers, but this hasn’t stopped us from enjoying our outside space. We have also enjoyed playing with the Duplo, cars, tap-a-shape, soil, paint and home-area.

We have also been focusing our attention on spring. Many of us have spotted new plants growing and blossom on the trees. We set out on a special spring walk around the school. We used clipboards and pencils to mark what we had found whilst on our walk. To our delight we spotted lambs in the field behind our school. We tried to count the lambs however, we soon realised it was rather tricky as the lambs like to move around a lot. Many of us noticed the range of colours we could see from all the beautiful flowers. Back in class, we made spring flowers using tissue paper. The children enjoyed layering the paper circles on top of each other. We then added a pipe cleaner to hold them all together. All the flowers have different coloured petals and they all look unique.

To celebrate Earth Day, which fell on the 22nd of April, we had an open discussion about different ways we can help protect our planet. Using recycled materials we created our own earth pictures. After sticking cotton wool onto a cardboard circle, we used pipettes to drop blue and green paint to represent our world. The children were able to tell me that we used blue and green to represent land and the sea. What a bunch of critical thinkers we have.

Gruffalo, goat, green, grapes. For our letter sound this week, we have been focusing on the g sound. I was incredibly impressed with the suggestions offered during our circle time discussion. I am looking forward to seeing if the children can come up with any new g words when they fill in their letter sound dictionaries.

Some of us needed to make a special wooden spoon for our class self-registration. It required the children to use a mirror and mark making tools to draw on their facial features. We also added hair using wool.

We are looking forward to a fun-filled summer term in Transition class!
