A helping hand
12 Sep 2025The first half of Form 6 were taken to our local food bank, The Sevenoaks Larder, on Monday afternoon.
They learnt how this charity was set up during lockdown to support local families who were struggling to meet all of their grocery needs. They continue to support local families who apply for some extra help, offering a choice from a selection of fresh, dried and tinned foods as well as some personal hygiene items and nappies.
The children set about packing the 20 or so orders, working efficiently and carefully. So efficiently, in fact, that there was time for some tidying of stock on the shelves and helping with the very important date-checking of new donations. The children learnt that it is illegal to even give away any food that is out of date. The charity finds that sometimes people clear out their cupboard at home when they make a big donation, but sadly anything that is out of date has to be binned.
Form 6 learnt that whilst some people asking for help are homeless, the vast majority are living near us in our community and who are needing a little extra temporary help for a variety of reasons, such as the rise in cost of food items, loss of work or ill health.
In science this week, Form 6 has been learning about the different food groups, how to eat a balanced diet, the digestive system and the role that each organ plays. They have been learning about the function of each of the food groups and how they contribute to good health. As part of their learning, the children have been asked to keep a food diary for the next week.
In English, it's been all about me this week! The class have been writing acrostic poems about themselves and Mrs Reay discovered some very interesting, previously unknown facts about the members of the class. Having written their first draft, the children then put their computer skills to the test and used Google image search and text formatting to make a visually-pleasing version of their acrostic for display.
This week, the children also played in their first sports matches of the term. A huge well done to everyone for playing so well and for representing the School so admirably.
