A helping hand
22 May 2026This week’s topic in Russell Robins was People Who Help Us.
The week started with a visit to the pop-up shop in the Old Hall. Whilst organising our items, I spoke to the children about the various groceries. Connections were made between colours, size and amounts. The children sat nicely whilst I explained how to handle the food and how we should carry the loaves of bread back to class. I explained that a great way to hold the bread would be to carry it over the shoulder like how Father Christmas carries his sack of presents. This explanation worked very well as it supported their understanding by comparing it to something.
There was a special delivery this week. I ordered one of our favourite resources… bobble dough! The children enjoyed creating cupcakes and many other culinary creations. Bobble dough is a great alternative to playdough.
As part of this week’s topic, we spoke about People Who Help Us and their job roles. I named a few which include; doctors, nurses, post officers, firefighters, dentists, veterinarians, teachers and lifeguards. To extend their learning, I spoke to the children about oral hygiene and the length of time we should brush our teeth for. Perhaps ask your children and see if they can tell you.
Dressing up has been of interest and the children have explored a variety of roles. Their favourites were firefighters and police officers …and, of course, princesses! The police officer was very sensible and he ensured that everyone was doing the right thing.
To model language, we played the Kim’s Game several times during the week to ensure each child had a turn. First, we used emergency vehicles and we spoke about different-sized fire engines and then we used small-world figures. We matched the vehicles to the correct figure.
It was lovely to see the children’s Home/School Journal news, especially as one of the Robins went on a fire engine fairground ride. Other news included; searching for bugs, planting/growing, baking and sticking. It is always lovely to see news linking to our topics as this supports the children’s learning. Likewise, it is also wonderful to see the children sharing their school experiences at home.
The Robins love spending time outside and one of our favourite sensory and mindfulness activities is to explore the grass without shoes and socks. Whilst exploring the field, we sat down and looked at the wonderful views and then, a short while later, we enjoyed a picnic. Our outdoor learning experiences included climbing over walls, chasing bubbles and climbing trees. These experiences promote the children’s independence and confidence whilst also strengthening their physical development. It is super important for children to use their whole bodies as this enables them to build strong gross motor skills which will support early writing.
This week’s cooking activities consisted of banana and chocolate cake, cheese spread sandwiches, rustic rolls and mint chocolate biscuits. We hope they shared some of their culinary creations with you all.
Continuing with our topic, we visited Mrs Chris in the kitchen as we had a slight emergency whilst making our biscuits. Unfortunately, we had used all the icing sugar, so Mrs Chris very kindly gave us some so we were able to finish our biscuits.
The CTouch was used to dance along to the Cha Cha Slide. The Robins have such good coordination and rhythm and there was lots of laughter too.
We hope you enjoyed our Pre-Prep Coffee Morning. The children all did a fantastic job and hopefully it provided an insight into how much fun the children have during their sessions… who said learning wasn’t fun!?!
After half term, our topics will be 30 Days Wild, Child Safety Week and Environmental Awareness. We encourage children to bring in something from home (just not too big please). This can be related to our weekly topic or anything else they would like to share or celebrate with us. The children enjoy sharing their objects from home during carpet time and it is a fantastic way to build effective communication and listening skills.
Have a lovely half-term break!
