Beyond the beanstalk
06 Feb 2026It has been an exciting week this week in Transition as we ventured up Jack’s beanstalk for an adventure! We began the week with some drama as we read the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. As we were reading, the children came up with lots of different actions for each part of the story.
These actions were very useful when Mrs Nelson needed help to put the story in the right order. We acted out the story and we were able to find the missing pictures straight away!
We carried on our adventure up the beanstalk in maths as we explored how to make numbers to 5. We used different coloured leaves on our beanstalk to explore which 2 smaller numbers add up to 5, then we used our learning to build towers of 5 cubes, using different numbers of each coloured cube. The children were superb at building their towers and were able to tell me which numbers they had used to make 5. Some children then chose to have a go at using their cubes to make different towers of 10!
During carpet time, we began to explore how the beanstalk had grown. The children loved exploring a variety of different seeds, noticing they were all very different! Some were stripy, some were smooth, others were rough or flat. We then explored the different things a plant needs to grow, including; water, sunshine and soil. I suggested we plant one of our seeds and put it in the cupboard to keep it safe but the children quickly told me that my plant couldn't grow in the cupboard as it would have no sunlight! The children then had a fantastic idea to set up an experiment to see which conditions are best for our plants. Once they have grown, we will let you know our results.
The children also loved getting hands-on outside as they explored seeds and soil whilst planting their very own magic beans. One of our favourite stories this week has been The Tiny Seed. The children were captivated by the journey of the tiny seed over mountains and oceans and we were a bit worried it wasn’t going to find anywhere to grow. Eventually, it found a spot and the children, remembering the different things it would need to grow, were confident that it would make it. It was a close call as a big weed nearly stole the tiny seed's sunshine as it started to shoot and once the tiny seed had flowered, it was nearly picked by a little boy, but the tiny seed made it and grew into the biggest sunflower of them all. We were a little bit sad when the beautiful flower died, but we knew that meant that lots of new seeds would be released to grow lots of new beautiful flowers.
We made the most of the sunshine this week and spent lots of time playing outside. The Russell Robins were very kind and made a bird feeder for us, so we hunted around for a good place to put it, before putting it high in the tree for the birds to enjoy. The children also created a fantastic obstacle course to practise their balance and jumping and some delicious treats were made in the mud kitchen. Transition were also treated to a very exciting show this week, as a special visitor came into school to run a drama workshop for the children. They loved getting involved with the drama and lots of giggles were shared through the story. We certainly are very lucky. After a busy week, I look forward to seeing how tall our magic beans have grown when we return to school next week and begin to celebrate Chinese New Year.
