A week fit for a king or queen

We have had a royally fun time in Transition this week, as we explored our theme on castles, knights, kings and queens.

We spoke about the kings and queens of the past, and their role in keeping their subjects happy. We also looked at pictures of the current King of England during his Coronation. We had a really interesting conversation about which rule the children would bring in, if they were king or queen for a day. The children had some wonderful ideas including giving everyone ice-cream, taking people on holiday and looking after people. I think the world would be a brilliant place with Transition as the Kings and Queens of England!

We read a very funny story called The Queen’s Knickers which made us all giggle! We pondered what knickers would be suitable for a visit to Russell House and the children decided they should, above all, be very comfortable!

Our sound this week was t. The children had so many ideas of words beginning with t including t-rex, tiger, tea and tomato. We also noticed that there are a few children in the class whose names begin with T. The children’s focus during this time is growing and it’s wonderful to see the progress they are making. Our oldest children in Transition have now completed all of their letter sounds, so have been practising spelling, and writing, some CVC words, in preparation for Form 1!

On Wednesday, we studied the different parts of a castle, and learned lots of new words including; battlements, drawbridge, moat and portcullis. The children were challenged to create their own castle using only squares, rectangles, circles and triangles. I loved seeing the children’s unique designs and hearing about the details they had included to keep the castle’s residents safe.

In maths this week, we have been looking at 2D shapes. We played a fun game on the computer where we had to feed the monster the correct shape, then set off outside to look for circles, triangles, squares and rectangles around the school. Everywhere we looked, we found more shapes; rectangular planks of wood on our Pirate Ship, circular flowers, triangular shapes in the gate and square paving on the floor, to name just a few! I was so impressed with the children’s observational skills, nothing gets past them!

The children loved finding out all about the life of a knight on Thursday, and really enjoyed dressing up in their protective clothing! We found out that knights have a Coat of Arms on their shield to help others to recognise them when they’re in battle and discussed what the different colours and animals represented. Lots of children created their own shields and thought carefully about their design.

In our role-play area, banquets were served, while the children drank from goblets, and princesses visited from far and wide. Luckily, we had some knights to protect them from the dragons, too!
