All things book-related

This week in Form 1, the children have loved our topic on all things book-related!

The children have been storytelling this week and creating their own stories. Using the story structure the children have become familiar with, they thought about the characters, the setting, the problem and the solution. Some children invented stories entirely from their own imagination and some enjoyed using a familiar story but adding a little twist to make it their own. The stories look wonderful and they were very creative.

We went on a Book Character Scavenger Hunt on Monday and made the most of the wonderful sunshine. The children listened carefully to the clues and stomped, bunny hopped, wiggleed and growled to each of the different locations. We found the Gruffalo, the Hungry Caterpillar, Maisy the Mouse, Spot the Dog and Paddington Bear. The final clue led us to the Farm where we found all the book characters waiting for us!

On Tuesday, Form 1 joined a drama workshop and had a great time imagining being different animals from under the sea. Minnows, sharks, starfish, dolphins and turtles to name a few. It was a fun filled and very energetic session and the children really loved it.

We couldn't let Pancake Day pass without enjoying some delicious pancakes! Although the children didn't make them themselves, they very much enjoyed selecting their favourite toppings and then rolling them up and devouring them. I have never seen pancakes disappear so quickly! It was a very delicious way to end Tuesday afternoon.

Form 1 were scientists this week and investigated the properties of different materials. The challenge was to find the best materials to keep Incy Wincy Spider dry. First we all made some predictions and explained our thinking. Then we tested tissue paper, plastic, card, tin foil, paper and felt. We made the test fair by only pouring water onto each material for 5 seconds and we made sure the size of each piece of material was the same. The children discovered that plastic was the most water-resistant as it repelled the water, keeping Incy Wincy nice and dry. Later, the children made their own structures to keep Incy Wincy dry and used their new knowledge of materials to make good choices about what to use.

In maths, the children have been learning about 2D shapes, naming and talking about their properties. We looked at the number, length and shape of the sides, the corners (or vertices) and learnt the names of more challenging shapes such as pentagon, octagon and trapezium. The children then tried an odd one out challenge to spot the shape in a group that did not have certain properties.

World Book Day on Thursday was an absolute highlight of the week and the children all looked amazing in their costumes! The children took it in turns to show their costumes to one another and share the book that inspired their character. We enjoyed reading stories all day long, some familiar favourites and some new! We all gathered as a Pre-Prep to have our photograph taken out in the sunshine, to capture all the marvellous costumes. Form 1 enjoyed writing speech bubbles to match their character, saying who they were and then thinking of another fact about themselves to write.

Just a quick reminder that we have a visit from best-selling author Sue Hendra next Friday, so if you would like to order a book for her to sign, please do fill in the order form to avoid disappointment.

It has been a super busy but wonderful week in Form 1!
