Beans and a bus
27 Sep 2024The children have loved the story of Naughty Bus this week with plenty of laughing at the antics he gets up to! The book always leads to lots of conversations about naughtiness and we like to look at the different ways the words are written to empathise with the illustrations.
We had such a lovely trip to Otford library and it was so great to have the whole class there to enjoy the activities offered by Lorraine and Marianne. They were both absolutely delighted with our autumn theme for their display board - please pop down and see it if you can! The children began with colouring in autumn leaves for another display in the library.
There was so much concentration going on and the children chose some wonderful colours for the leaves. They then were asked to place the leaves on the display boards by themselves. Marianne then read us lots of stories about transport. There were no naughty buses in the stories, just lots of lorries, trucks, trains and diggers. The children, as always, were impeccably behaved in the library and walking with myself, Mrs Sayers and Mrs Parmenter from school and back, holding hands and listening well. On our way back, we saw a cheeky heron eating a fish in the pond and a HUGE car transporter! We stopped and waved at the transporter as it went past and the driver hooted his horn which made us all jump! The children chose some lovely books for us to read in Nursery together.
There has been some amazing imaginative play with the cars and bricks this week. Just like in the Naughty Bus story, the children built tall buildings like we see in London and had lots of traffic jams and, of course, the Naughty Bus!
The children have been practising their scissor skills by cutting and snipping along the different lines to each of the vehicles. Again, so much concentration and focus and excitement when they reached each vehicle to cut out. They have also carefully traced dotted lines along wavy and curvy lines on the vehicle sheets, showing increasing control of their mark-making tools.
Some of the children have been exploring baked beans with the Naughty Bus. As I am sure you know, the Naughty Bus drives through the little boy's dinner in the story, causing a huge mess on the floor! Luckily the children have been super at keeping most of the beans in the tray. Mrs Sayers and I have been treated to plates and bowls full of beans too!
The children have been looking at numerals 1 to 5 on the maths buses to create their own number books. For each of the numbers, the children had to find the corresponding number of sticky dots to place onto the circles. They then placed each number bus in the correct order for their books.
The children loved exploring the conkers which Mrs Sayers brought in from a walk in the woods. They were delighted at finding the shiny conkers inside the soft shells and we chatted about the difference between the spiky shells and the soft inside. As they were quite prickly to hold, the children loved squashing the shells with their feet to find the conkers! They enjoyed exploring the conkers and pine cones with tongs and tweezers and fitting them into different containers.
