Being healthy
23 Jan 2026This week, we introduced our topic Being Healthy, starting the week with a fantastic discussion about the different things we can do to keep our bodies healthy.
The children came up with some excellent ideas, including washing the germs off our hands, eating healthy food, keeping our bodies clean, doing lots of exercise and getting plenty of fresh air. We also discussed how it is important to get lots of sleep to help our bodies to rest and grow. Throughout the rest of the week, we focused on exploring lots of different healthy foods and the children impressed me with their knowledge, explaining that fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins to keep our bodies strong and healthy.
During carpet time, the children were experts as they helped me to sort my food into healthy and unhealthy. We chatted about our favourite foods, and reminded ourselves that it is okay to eat unhealthy food sometimes, as long as it’s only a little bit.
The children have been experimenting with lots of different ways to use vegetables as part of their play. Some children created fantastic artwork by printing with potatoes and mushrooms, exploring the different patterns and shapes they could make. Other children created some beautiful still life paintings of vegetables, looking really carefully at the different shapes and colours they could see.
Following on from our Supertato story in literacy last week, some children became real superheroes, exploring how to rescue the frozen vegetables that Evil Pea had trapped in the freezer. It was tricky work, but with a little bit of team work and lots of determination, they did it! We also loved using lots of different materials including fabric and pipecleaners to create our very own super vegetables to play with in the small world supermarket.
In maths this week, we explored how to find one more. First, I had to create a number line on the carpet, but thank goodness the children were there, because I kept making mistakes! They were very helpful in telling me that my numbers were in the wrong order and they worked together to help me get it right. Then, I needed some help to count my mushrooms, so the children took it in turns to pick one mushroom out of my bowl, saying the next number as they did so. Once we worked out how many we had, we made some small groups of mushrooms on the carpet. The children were fantastic at using the number line to work out how many one more would make.
In Literacy, we continued to work on our story Supertato. This week, we used our creativity and our fine motor skills to design our own super fruits and vegetables. The children helped me to create my own Supernana, reminding me of the different features and shapes to include in my hero. Then we went to the tables and all set to work designing our own hero! The children really thought about the marks they were making, explaining all of the features of their drawings, including Superstrawb, who had a belt for all her tools, and Supercarrot who had extra-long legs so he could run really fast! We started phonics this week with a little game of vegetable eye spy where we practised identifying the initial sound in words. Then, we all explored our new sound m, thinking of lots of different things beginning with m, including a mouse, a monster and music. I am so proud of how well the children are doing with their phonics. We have some fantastic attitudes and the children are making great progress. Well done Transition! Once again, I look forward to another busy week as we continue exploring how to keep our bodies healthy.
