Books and ideas
07 Mar 2025The children in Form 6 have thoroughly enjoyed our annual Book Week.
It all started with a visit from author and GP, Dr Hannah Weston-Simons, who presented a wonderful assembly on Monday. She read some brilliant poems from her book Blood, Bones & Bladders - The poetry of your body and she explained the science behind her poems, which fascinated the children. In particular, they learned about red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
Later on, on Monday, Form 6 also made musical instruments out of test tubes. They managed to create an octave of notes by adding water incrementally to each test tube. They then demonstrated their skill to Ms Norford before going off to their music lesson.
In maths, we used the story book How many Jelly Beans as inspiration for our lesson. With an average jelly bean measuring around 2cm tall, we worked out that 5,000 jelly beans stacked on top of each other would measure the same as a building 100 metres tall. We then used this knowledge to create our own unit of measurement, jb (jelly beans) to measure some of the world's most famous landmarks. Did you know that Big Ben is 4800 jb tall, whilst the Burj Khalifa measured in at a whopping 41400 jb?
On Wednesday, we were lucky enough to have another author visit. This time, it was Lindsay Galvin, author of Darwin’s Dragons, The Call of the Titanic and many other children’s books. Previously, Lindsay was a teacher for 20 years and she made her workshop fun and exciting for all of the children. It was lovely to see the class so interested and engaged and they asked her some really thoughtful questions.
On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day and the children came to school in their fantastic costumes. Here are just some of the book characters we had in Form 6: a dragon, Percy Jackson, The Worst Witch, Susan, Lucy, Dexter Proctor, Glinda, Elphaba, Jasmine Green, Hermione, Ginny, Harry Potter, Lori Ingles, Wednesday Adams, a farmer, Billionaire Boy, Queen of Hearts, Shirley Gables, Bear Grylls and Skandar.
As part of World Book Day, a competition has been set, which is to design a book token. In their art lessons, Form 6 has been working on their book token designs and they began their research on Chromebooks and they also embedded their own ideas, based on their favourite books. Some children incorporated clever slogans and words to add to their book token designs. Once finished, all of their end results will be entered into the competition. Good luck, Form 6!
