Books, nooks, cooks and hooks

Happy Book Week!

Transition started school on Monday to a big surprise in the classroom! There was a lovely cosy reading den with books, blankets, cushions and cuddly bears set up on the carpet area. We made the most of the reading den and kicked book week off with cosying up and reading books together. We shared traditional tales, modern stories and Old MacDonald’s farm, written by none other than Transition themselves!

On Tuesday, we took part in a book scavenger hunt in the glorious sunshine. We had to stomp, stamp, sneak, hop, wiggle and wind our way around the trail, trying to guess which book character was being described, then listen carefully to the instructions, to find the next one! Transition were so good at listening, that they managed to find them all!

Later that morning, we went on an adventure under the sea, in a special drama workshop. We had to search for the hidden pearl, learn how to move like starfish, sharks and turtles, and stand as still as statues when the monster from the deep swam through the door!  The children had so much fun and there was lots of excitement and laughter throughout!

Book week just wouldn’t be the same without reading the Gruffalo, and all the children enjoyed joining in with the familiar verse. After the story, we decided to make ‘Gruffalo Claw’ biscuits. Everyone helped to measure out the ingredients and mix it all together, before baking them in the oven. They smelt delicious and we had to use all our willpower to not eat them there and then!

Of course, Thursday was the big event with our World Book Day Dress Up day! It was so exciting seeing so many different costume ideas and talking about which characters everyone was. We had lots of photos taken, drew pictures of our costumes and shared lots of great books together! We have also been busy doing lots of book-themed activities including making ‘superhero masks’, eating leaves like ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ and enjoying our ‘library’ role play area.

If you haven’t done so already, there’s still time to order your books for signing, when best-selling author, Sue Hendra visits us next week. We are going to have a super-tato time!
