Busy bees

This week, Form 5 went on a science trip. Here are some recounts of the trip from the pupils.

The place we went to was called Bees and Refugees, in Sevenoaks. When we got there, we saw a few scouts testing if they wanted to move into the hive. We saw some honey extracted and the owner got some bees and showed them to us and some of us got to try a bee suit on. William

We learnt about bees and how they make honey and how people make wax from honeycomb. First, we planted some plants, then some of us looked at the wax candles and others dressed up in bee suits. After that, we went to a honey-making machine and the man showed us what the honeycomb looked like. Euan
It was super fun and we saw real bees, honey and their larvae too. We learnt how the bees made honey. My favourite fact is that the women are in charge of the hive and in winter, the female bees throw the male bees (drones) out! Jessie
We started off by planting our own plants, with lots of seeds to choose from. They told us about honeycomb, then told us how to make wax. Some of us had the chance to try on the bee suits. After that, they took us to see some bee hives. It was very interesting. Harry
Elsewhere, linking in with Environmental Awareness Week, Form 5 has been looking at the book and film, Varmints, by Helen Ward and Marc Craste. The story is set in a fictional rural environment, which is suddenly invaded by others, who bring urbanisation and darkness. Life always finds a way, however, and the children have been using these ideas and images to write a poem which demonstrates contrast and the theme of hope in the darkness.

Form 5 are having great fun designing a game based on the concepts of musical theory. They are at the early stages but are already looking forward to bringing home their game before the end of the term.
