Centipede's 100 shoes
06 Mar 2026Form 5 have had an enjoyable and busy week taking part in the activities for Book Week.
One highlight for the class was the competitive book quiz, where the children showed off their knowledge of stories, authors and characters. The quiz created lots of excitement and friendly competition as teams worked together to answer the questions and earn points. The children also enjoyed a presentation with our visiting author, Helen Peters, on Wednesday.
Excitement is also building for the Form 5 production of Greece Goes to Pieces. The stage is now up and rehearsals are beginning to take shape as the children practise their roles and start bringing the show to life.
In English and art lessons, the class have also been learning about advertising and what makes a poster eye-catching and persuasive. Using these ideas, they have been designing their own engaging posters to help promote the upcoming production. It has been wonderful to see their creativity and enthusiasm as they combine their learning with preparations for the performance.
On World Book Day, Mr Shield read the story Centipede's 100 Shoes by Tony Ross. After solving several calculations linked to the story, Form 5's attention was turned to the leftover shoes at the end. The children had to decide how they could share the 100 shoes exactly between different animals so that they were all used up. For example, 7 octopi, 6 tigers, 8 flamingos and one wolf could share the 100 shoes perfectly. We were also very surprised to find out that, despite centipede meaning 100 feet, most centipedes have closer to 42 feet!
