Colourful fireworks
07 Nov 2025This week’s topics in Robins were Fireworks and Exploring Colour.
We welcomed two new starters to our class at the beginning of the week and they certainly enjoyed themselves, visiting the Old Hall to collect this week’s groceries. All the Robins were able to identify a variety of fruit and vegetables and we counted how many eggs were inside the box.
Christmas has arrived in Robins with the start of our rehearsals. The children have begun to learn the songs in preparation for our Christmas Concert and Party. We are counting down the weeks until our favourite festive friend arrives for more festive cheer.
Each term, we practise a fire drill to prepare the children in the event of a fire at Russell House. Mr Phil guided us and showed us where to go and we spoke about how we should walk like speedy spiders. Once in the playground, the children stood on the white line and listened for their names. They all stood very sensibly and they helped to count how many children were present.
We received a delivery this week of our new ride-ons. Lots of fun was had, driving around the road and collecting leaves by placing them inside their baskets. These are definitely a great addition to our outdoor space.
The Robins were very excited during snack time as one of our Form 6 helpers shared the children’s spooky Halloween news. He did such a great job of keeping the children engaged and a short while later, he also read a story to the children before making his way back to class. The Robins absolutely love the older children visiting our class and they are such great role models for our little ones.
Halloween has been a popular interest so, to incorporate the children’s interests, I drew a spooky chalk road with witches, ghosts and pumpkins!
The weather has been surprisingly mild this week and it has been lovely watching the children play together in the sand pit and mud kitchen. They used open-ended resources to support their play and one of the children made a delicious cake.
As part of this week’s topic, the children explored many colourful activities. It was great fun, exploring the fireworks painting tray with aluminium foil. Following on from this, there was an activity tray which consisted of floury sparkles and stars. Paintbrushes were used to find the stars and they also made marks in the flour. The CTouch was used to watch fireworks and we recreated our own display, listening to the sounds as they went bang, pop and fizz.
I introduced our new song board during carpet time and the children enjoyed singing a variety of songs and removing the velcro pictures. Their favourite song was Five Little Ducks and we counted each duck and looked at the numbers.
Lots of fun was had during our sensory circuits in the Russell Hall. The children explored the equipment independently and they moved in many different ways. Football is a fond favourite at the moment, so we also kicked the balls and scored goals. Miss Ruby and I were super proud at the end as the children helped Mr Phil to tidy away without even being asked. Great jobs, Robins!
This week’s cooking activities consisted of firework biscuits, sparklers, pizza and banana cake. It is so important for children to love and enjoy what they do. Therefore, we all got very messy and sticky whilst dipping our sparklers into melted chocolate, sprinkles and marshmallows. In true Robins style, we also had a cheeky taste as you can see by their faces!
We love nothing more than to spend time outside, exploring the natural world and enjoying the freedom of space. Never missing a fun learning opportunity, we jumped in the leaves and threw them up in the air. This activity was great for the children’s language as we learnt some new words (crunchy and crackly). The Robins also enjoyed playing the trumpet for some of the older children (sterilised after each use).
Next week’s topic is Being Kind, Remembrance and Nursery Rhyme Week. Your child is welcome to bring in something from home linked to our topic or one of their favourite things (just not too big!). Have a lovely weekend.
