Dinosaur world
14 Nov 2025Despite our dino topic, we started our week off with Remembrance Day.
We explored some beautiful poppy pictures together, and we began to consider why we wear poppies and why it is important to take two minutes of silence. The children were excellent at recalling why we wear our poppies, and enjoyed creating their own, using craft materials or play-dough. We enjoyed weaving the red wool in and out to create our own wool poppies, and the children were fantastic at counting the correct number of pompom petals to add to each flower.
All the Pre-Prep children showed fantastic respect and sat absolutely silently for two minutes. It was a lovely chance for reflection in a busy school term!
We continued to explore poppies in our maths focus this week, as we investigated different ways to sort poppies. The children did a great job, working together to sort the poppies by size, colour and number of petals. We also loved using the tweezers as we practised our careful counting to move the correct number of pompoms from the bowl, onto each poppy plate.
The children loved discussing their favourite dinosaurs during our carpet times this week, and came up with some superb adjectives to describe them. On Wednesday, we had a go at drawing our own dinosaur picture. We had to watch and listen carefully to the instructions to help us make the right shapes for our dinosaur. We also had fun exploring how different dinosaurs are adapted. We learned that some dinosaurs had flat teeth to grind down plants. These animals are called herbivores. Whereas, some dinosaurs had sharp, pointy teeth to cut through meat.
These are carnivores.
We have enjoyed lots of dinosaur-themed play this week. The children helped me to create our very own dinosaur world in the small world area. We had to mix green paint, cornflour, sand and soil to create the right terrain for our dinosaurs. We also added lots of trees, a cave, a volcano, and of course, the dinosaurs! The children loved stomping their dinosaurs around, creating their own imaginative stories. This week, we have also made our own dinosaurs using junk modelling, rescued the dinosaurs trapped in the icebergs and created dinosaur footprints in the playdough. We also used our magnifying glasses to explore some dinosaur fossils we found in the sand tray.
Our letter sound this week was a. We put our brains together to come up with some different words beginning with a and we came up with ant, astronaut and allosaurus. Well done, Transition! We then had a go at writing our a sound, and filled in our a I-spy, where we had to colour in all the pictures beginning with a.
Once again, I look forward to another busy week in Transition as we continue our dinosaur exploration!
