Dive in!

We have had a fun-filled week here in Transition! We started the week off by diving into a strange yet peaceful world, full of weird and wonderful creatures, under the sea.

We used our books to do some research as we explored the different creatures we might find, including; sharks, starfish and sting rays. The children loved discussing the animals we had seen and sharing which ones were their favourite. We were fascinated to learn the difference between fish, sharks, whales and dolphins and the children remembered that fish and sharks both use gills to breathe, but whales and dolphins can’t breathe underwater, they need to come to the surface to breathe, just like us!

There has also been lots of sea-themed play this week, including; creating water slides for the sea creatures, making mermaid tails with playdough and cutting our own sea creature puppets. The children have loved visiting the animals in our new aquarium in the home corner and they have been practising their counting and number recognition as they bought and sold tickets and fish food to each other.

On Tuesday, the day we had all been waiting for finally arrived… Sports Day! It was so lovely to see all the mummies, daddies and other family members cheering the children on. It made a big difference to the children, as their legs went a little bit faster, and the balls and beanbags landed closer to their target. It just goes to show that a little support goes a long way! It was wonderful to see the Transition children cheering on their friends in Nursery and Form 1 too, and not giving up when things went wrong. They displayed courage and determination and managed to do it all with huge smiles on their faces. Well done Transition! Keep an eye on our Instagram and Facebook where the photos of Sports Day will be posted soon.

Our letter sound this week was f. The children came up with some brilliant suggestions of words beginning with f, including fish, frog and friend. They each had a go at writing our new sound in the sandpit with their finger, chalking it on the floor or making it with the play-dough. They did a fantastic job! The children have also been looking really carefully at the shape of the letters in their names and they are becoming name-writing experts!

We have also enjoyed listening to lots of stories this week, thinking about our friendships and feelings. We particularly liked the story Sharing a Shell, looking at all the different sea creatures in the illustrations. It provided a good opportunity to talk about kindness and sharing too. The children also listened intently as we read A better best friend. This story was all about a squirrel, who made a new best friend. The children spotted immediately how the other friends were feeling and they came up with some lovely suggestions of things they could do to cheer up the left-out friends. By the end of the story, the squirrel had worked out that having lots of friends is lovely, because each friend enjoys doing something different, and it’s even more special when they can all play together. Transition had a thought about their own friendships, and we worked out that it's okay to play with someone different and our friends are still our friends, even if we don’t play together all the time.

Transition enjoyed picking out gifts at the RHPA Father's Day stall this week. We hope you enjoy your presents!
