Down in the trenches
18 Oct 2024As the first half of term draws to a close, the children have been very busy in school. One of the main highlights of the week has definitely been the amazing work that the children have been producing in humanities lessons.
With their current theme of global conflict, the children found it fascinating to see real life replica weapons from the English Civil War during Mr Plant’s assembly on Tuesday. Mr Simpson, a Civil War reenactor, shared many pieces of interesting information and wowed us all with the complexities of weapons and armour in this time period.
Fast-forward to the 1930s and the rise of Nazi Germany, and the children were engaged in meaningful debate in the classroom. Were World War 1 and 2 separate wars, or was the end of the First World War simply the catalyst for the start of the second? This is the conundrum that our children were tasked with answering. Why not try to engage them in debate at home to see which stance they agreed with.
We have also witnessed the start of Mr Plant’s trenches project, with the first few models being brought into school. If they have not started yet, some inspiration could certainly be drawn from some of our early entries, which have used materials such as cake, chocolate, tea bags and lollipop sticks to construct their masterpieces.
At the time of writing, we will not yet know the results of the Inter House football and hockey tournaments to be held on Friday afternoon, however, we hope to see as many of you there as possible to cheer on our children. Have a well-earned rest over half-term and we look forward to welcoming you back on November 4th.
