Everything green and tech
12 Jun 2026This week’s topics in Russell Robins were Great Big Green Week and Technology.
We started the week with a visit to the Old Hall to collect our weekly shopping from the pop-up shop. The children enjoyed playing the role of a shopkeeper in class, so lots of fun was had exchanging raffle tickets for groceries… such fantastic imaginations, Robins.
As part of this week’s topics, we celebrated everything green along with the continuation of 30 Days Wild, which worked very well as it connected to nature. Lots of fun was had playing with green playdough and the Robins enjoyed using cake cases as part of their imaginative play, along with buttons and pom-poms.
Great Big Green Week is a celebration of action on climate change and nature. This also includes biodiversity and sustainable living. We ventured around the school grounds and looked for wildflowers and different types of trees. On returning to class, green sand was used to decorate our special resources from The Wildlife Trust. The children added sand to the 30 Days Wild collage tree.
With our Sports Day fast approaching, we have been super busy practising our races. The Robins are doing such a good job of trying their best. They certainly find my examples of running very funny and they use their thumbs to show me whether it’s right.
Practising for our Pre-Prep Celebration is underway and we are using the stage at every opportunity to ensure the Robins feel comfortable and confident. One of the songs is a well-known song with a… Robins twist!
Technology has also been a focus this week and we used technology to explore and listen to French songs. Some of the Robins were able to remember the French words for red and yellow. Perhaps you could ask your child.
Our cooking activities consisted of bread rolls, pumpkin cake, Great Big Green cucumber sandwiches, ham and cheese croissants and banana smoothies. Interestingly, the children were able to recall that the round piece of ham (once cut in half) makes a semicircle. The children did a great job of spreading, mixing, filling and chopping. They enjoyed taking turns pressing the button on our blender. This activity was also good as it helps children become more familiar with loud noise.
It was lovely sharing the children’s news from home and it is always great to read comments which link to our weekly topics. Thank you once again for your continued support. It is truly wonderful to receive such a great level of parental support as it extends the children’s learning.
Next week, our topics will be Healthy Eating and Strawberry Picking. We have lots of fun activities planned to support the children’s learning. We encourage children to bring in something from home (just not too big please). This can be related to our weekly topic or anything else they would like to share or celebrate with us. The children enjoy sharing their objects from home during carpet time and it is a fantastic way to build effective communication and listening skills.
Fingers crossed for a sunny week ahead as the children are super excited for our school trip to Stonepitts Farm and then also our Sports Day and Teddy Bears’ Picnic.
Have a lovely (hopefully dry and sunny) weekend.
