Exploring colours
27 Feb 2026This week’s topic in Russell Robins was Colour.
The week started with a visit to the Old Hall to collect our weekly shopping. We spoke about all the different groceries and the variety of colours. The children listened to the instructions and then carefully placed everything inside the bags.
As part of this week’s topic we explored colour in many ways. The children learnt the difference between light and dark colours and they were able to use these new words when describing which sticker they would like during carpet time. The children’s vocabulary is growing and it is wonderful to hear them use a greater number of words.
Lots of fun was had with paint and the Robins were amazed to make green after mixing yellow and blue together using cotton buds and paper plates. The children thoroughly enjoyed this activity and it kept a good level of focus for the duration.
The children took part in an adult-directed activity during carpet time. The Robins were able to listen to two-part instructions whilst also listening for keywords. The intention of this activity was to promote their understanding and listening skills which will later support their ability to manage routine. This activity consisted of a variety of shapes and two different-sized containers. Each child was given a description of a shape and then they were either instructed to place it in the large basket or small box.
Our sensory PE circuits support the children to move in a variety of ways and as an extra warm-up activity, we ran around the outside of the circuit. We played a fun game of Ready, Steady Go. The Robins were able to stop and start when asked, which is very good.
The parental support has been phenomenal again this week, so I’d like to take this opportunity to say, thank you. It really is great to share such interesting resources as part of our topics.
We explored the school grounds on foot, by bike and whilst wearing our all-in-one suits. Picnics were enjoyed and lots of fun was had, exploring the school woods. Risk-taking is an important aspect in the early years so with this in mind, the children independently climbed small trees and then navigated their way back to ground.
The Kim’s Game took a colour twist and the children sat nicely whilst counting the Duplo. They were able to identify each colour and then recall which colour was missing from the tray. Well done, Robins.
A new activity was introduced this week and it was certainly popular with the children. Yoga is a great way for children to boost their coordination and strength.
Continuing with our colour topic, we made a repeated pattern using Skittles. I carefully added hot water and the children sat very nicely whilst they observed the changes. We were left with a beautiful rainbow of colour. ![]()
This week’s cooking activities consisted of colourful cupcakes, bread rolls, vegetable soup and sandwiches. The Robins enjoyed mixing, chopping, weighing and spreading.
Next week’s topic is Book Week. We have lots of fun activities planned, including some fun experiments. We encourage children to bring in something from home (just not too big please). This can be related to our weekly topic or anything else they would like to share or celebrate with us. The children enjoy sharing their objects from home during carpet time and it is a fantastic way to build effective communication and listening skills.
Have a lovely weekend.
