Facts about skeletons
22 May 2026This week in Form 1, the children have been working really hard in preparation for our Pre-Prep Coffee Morning presentation. Form 1 have not only been practising their lines and songs but also trying really hard to remember to use big clear speaking voices. The children have really loved this topic and I know they are super excited to share it with you all. We started our new topic of Our Bodies this week and the children were fascinated to learn about their skeleton.
They were full of questions about bones and their purpose and they were really interested in finding out more. After looking through some information books, the children discovered that our skeleton helps support our entire body. We discussed all the different types of bones and where they are in the body.
To explore this further, we drew around one of the children on a large sheet of paper and then, as a class, we tried to draw the bones that would be in each part of the body. This led to conversations about blood, the heart, our brains and stomachs! The children learnt how these organs are protected by the skeleton. Once we had learnt some facts about our skeletons, their purpose and why they are important, the children then wrote about their skeleton in their literary books.
In maths this week, we have continued to learn how to count up in groups of 2s, 5s and 10s as a mental warm-up. We used our bead string to support the children's understanding of what we are doing each time we count on in a group. Our focus this week has been to revisit subtraction, what this looks like when written as a number sentence and how we might go about solving these problems. We have encouraged the children to use their fingers as well as their knowledge of number bonds to support their calculations, but also continue to use tens frames and counters for numbers beyond 10. The children have also practised careful counting, number recognition as well as number formation.
We have also been learning all about keeping our teeth healthy and why this is important. After learning all the ways we can look after our teeth, the children made posters to remind people of all things they can do to look after their teeth. The children drew things such as; visiting the dentist, brushing twice a day, eating healthy snacks, drinking milk, eating dairy products and only having water at bedtime. The children did a great job with their posters!
The children have also enjoyed painting their little clay Bog Babies that they created last week. They used some lovely pearlescent paint to do this and this has given their Bog Babies a shiny effect. They are looking forward to taking them home to care for them.
The children have worked very hard over the past few weeks and certainly deserve a restful half term!
