Gathering seeds
19 Sep 2025This week’s topic in Russell Robins was Seed Gathering.
The week started with a visit to the pop-up shop in the Old Hall. Never missing a learning opportunity, we discussed the variety of fruit and vegetables and we also counted the bananas. The Robins did such good team work and very carefully packed all the groceries into reusable shopping bags. I wonder if they also help you at home when you go shopping. Please do let us know and it would be great to see some photos in the children’s Home/School Journals.
As part of this week’s topic, I brought in some seeds from my garden for the children to take home and share with their families. First, the Robins decorated their seed envelopes and then they helped to open their envelope whilst Miss Ruby and I popped in the seeds. We had a discussion about the variety of seeds and I showed them a picture of how the seeds will eventually grow into beautiful flowers. The children’s favourite seeds were the alliums and sea holly. Please keep the seeds in a dark, cool place until next March and then you can pop them in pots.
Continuing with our topic, we watched The Tiny Seed on the CTouch board. Children learn in a variety of ways and although some children prefer to look at a book, some children are more visual so it is also beneficial to watch the story on the CTouch.
Miss Ruby and I are thrilled with the amount of parental support and engagement during our weekly topics. It is great to have so much support as this strengthens the children’s learning in many ways. The children enjoy sharing their interests during carpet time and this supports their communication and language development. In addition, we have been promoting the use of questions. This week, we provided some examples of questions and the Robins were able to ask some of their own. Well done, everyone!
There was lots of balancing, jumping and rolling in this week’s sensory PE circuit. It is wonderful to see the children’s independence and confidence shine through as they use the benches without adult support. We finished the session with a game of sleeping bunnies and snapping crocodiles.
The Robins have been such skilful bakers and we made a couple of deliveries to Mrs Tickner, Mrs Parker and Mr McCarthy. We think their favourite creations were the flower cakes. Our culinary creations consisted of focaccia bread, flower cakes, seeded rolls, Baby Shark cakes and cheese and onion scones.
Sometimes our cooking activities are themed around the weekly topic and other times, are based upon the children’s interests. One of our Robins has shown an increased interest in Baby Shark so, incorporating the interests of our children, we made Baby Shark cakes.
It has certainly been a very blustery week but we didn’t mind as it added to even more fun! We enjoyed several walks around the school grounds and a hot chocolate treat was enjoyed by all. Never missing a photo opportunity, we took a selfie on the bench whilst watching the older children take part in PE.
Lots of fun was had in music when we sat in a circle and used a huge scrunchie. The children’s favourite thing was when we let go of the scrunchie when the music stopped.
Next week’s topic is Keep Our Beaches Clean. Your child is welcome to bring in something from home linked to our topic or one of their favourite things (just not too big). Have a lovely weekend!
