How many legs?
19 Jun 2026This week in Form 1, we have had a very busy week! Our topic on rock pools has continued, with lots of activities linked to this interest available for the children to explore.
Our maths this week has linked to the book One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab. This book explores addition and the composition of numbers to 10 and beyond. The children needed to count how many feet each of the characters had and how many feet there were in total when new characters were added. This story is lots of fun and encourages the children to apply their understanding of counting up in 2s or 10s to solve the problems as well as addition. They have been recording their answers in their maths books and trying hard to form their numbers correctly. Later in the week, the children revisited
number bonds to 10, adding the characters legs together to find one of the parts to make 10.
On Tuesday, the children took part in Sports Day. They did fantastically well, running their races with confidence and showing great teamwork. They all participated with huge smiles and clearly loved the enthusiasm with which all the parents cheered and clapped for them, so thank you all for joining in so brilliantly! Keep an eye on our Instagram and Facebook where the photos of Sports Day will be posted soon.
The children have learned how to draw an octopus by listening to a step-by-step guide. They followed each of the steps and then added their own details and other creatures if they wished. They chose which colour they would like their octopus to be and they each look unique, which is great. The children will be using their pictures for their Father's Day cards.
The children have been getting creative this week and made their very own rock pool complete with creatures! We used a large cardboard box and some egg boxes to create the base and outer edge of our rock pool. Then it was time to try paper mache! Using strips of tissue dipped in a mixture of PVA and water, the children covered the egg cartons and cardboard box base. Once dry, the children mixed a range of colours to bring the rock pool to life. They made some very realistic greens and browns for the rocks and wanted to paint blue to represent the water. Meanwhile, other children decided to make their own sea creatures to live in the rock pool. They were very inventive when doing this and used all the resources available to make jellyfish, sea anemones and crabs.
We have also been learning about food chains, how the habitat impacts the food available for each animal and how they rely on one another to survive. We watched a BBC clip about rock pools and learned about the seaweed, crabs and sea anemones, thinking about what each of these creatures eats. We looked through a Powerpoint to further understand what a food chain is and the children could think of lots of examples of habitats and food chains that exist within them. We then thought about what food chains might look like in a rock pool. After discussing this, the children drew their very own rock pool food chain. Starting with seaweed, then whelks, then crabs and finally seagulls. They labelled their food chains and coloured their drawings.
Form 1 enjoyed visiting the Father's Day stall to choose gifts for their daddies in readiness for Sunday. They very much enjoyed choosing items they thought their daddy might like - the jars of sweets were very popular!
We have been working hard on our poems and songs in preparation for our Pre-Prep Celebration in the last week of term. They have been superstars and are becoming more confident at remembering each of the words – well done Form 1!
