Indigo ideas

Science Week's colour was indigo and Form 6 looked at how this colour could be used to indicate or even dictate mood and emotions.

Linking their ideas to the class book, The Boy at the Back of the Class, they were given free rein to produce something creative to reflect the changing emotions of Ahmet, the refugee boy in the story. From the loneliness and isolation of fleeing his country and not speaking the language, to the calm and peace of finding friends who really care for him, Ahmet's life could certainly be described in shades of indigo.

In music, the children composed some lyrics to I can Sing a Rainbow, using the colour indigo as inspiration. They were excited to sing their newly created song in assembly.

In French, Form 6 took part in a fun Mystery Object Challenge. An indigo-coloured object was hidden in a bag and pupils had to guess what it was using a list of useful yes/no questions in French. With Chromebooks to support their answers, Form 6 developed their enquiry skills, formed hypotheses and explored language learning through curiosity. Objects included blueberries, a purple flower or a kingfisher.

In humanities, Form 6, has been exploring the rise of the British Empire. This week we have investigated the Scramble for Africa. The children played a game, taking it in turns to colonise parts of Africa, following specific goals set by a government. For example, Britain wanted a railroad from the north to south of the continent. They had to show strategy and an understanding of their country's aspirations to succeed. It gave the children a good insight into what was happening at the time and some of the decision-making that was taking place. They then had a closer look at some of the reasons for wanting to colonise Africa and the impact of these events.
