Keeping safe on the road

Well done to all of the nursery children for another fantastic week full of imagination and team work. We have not only learnt how to be sensible passengers and pedestrians as part of Road Safety Week, we have also been reading The Three Little Pigs.

Inside the classroom, the children have used their cutting skills to create their own set of character puppets and used these to act out the story set up as a small world on the tuff tray. This really helped their physical development, as well as their communication and language skill.

Mrs Sayers also read them the story with the stick puppets during carpet time. The children did an amazing job remembering what each character says and the order the events occur in. They all showed great confidence when speaking their characters' parts.

We have also had some messy and sensory experiences this week. Our muddy pigs tuff tray was a hit with the children, they enjoyed exploring the natural materials, mud and sand with their hands and using cloths with soapy water to give the pigs a bath.

On Thursday, the children also tried out some STEM building the little pigs' houses. We started with lollipop sticks, straws, playdough, sand, flour and water. The children enjoyed mixing the materials together to create sticky cement and trying to piece items together to create structures. We spoke about how to make things stronger, and the children showed great imagination, sharing new ideas and finding their own resources to use.

The children also created a house in the garden! We started off with leaves and twigs, but quickly realised we couldn't fit inside. One child suggested we use the fences as the walls, and very quickly they worked as a team to build the roof out of large sticks. To keep the rain out, they added a blanket to the top, and to stop the sticks sliding off the fence, they squished wet leaves between the gaps. Another child even suggested we used leaves as carpet! They loved using this house to act out the story of the pigs and the wolf.

Another highlight of the week was our assembly. We watched some of the older children from the main school practice their gymnastics routines. The nursery children were all so engaged and fascinated, exclaiming wow and that's amazing throughout. What an inspiring performance!

Next week we are going to be reading The Tiger Who Came to Tea. Have a lovely weekend!
