Over the past few weeks, we have focused on handstands, backwards rolls, cartwheels and frog balances. The children have been set the challenge of learning the skill or developing the skill further. For example, backward rolls have been performed using a ramp or on the floor, some children have worked on a backward roll to straddle, a backward roll to front support or even to handstand, including a pirouette and a controlled lever back down. When the children were practising their frog balances, we looked at how long you would have to hold it to make a new World Record and it was over eight minutes!

Form 5 have been looking at some jazz music in class over the last few weeks. They have learned a piece based on the 12 bar blues called Kenny' (although Form 5 were keen to change one letter to call it Penny instead! Form 5 have explored how to improvise a short jazz solo on the chime bars and they are now embarking on composing a slightly longer solo to play. Some children were keen to bring in their instruments from home too!

In English, the children have loved creating cinquains and haikus, counting syllables and carefully choosing their words. Many of them decided to write their poems as a riddle and the class had great fun trying to work out what was being described. The answers were as diverse as fenec fox and dragon fruit. Having mastered syllable and line structures in these popular poem formats, they then had a go at creating their own syllable structure poem, called a meku. They decided on the number of lines, syllables and a topic that was personal to them and enjoyed sharing these with the class.
