May I approach the bench?

This week Form 7 returned to London to visit the Royal Courts of Justice.

The purpose of the trip was to learn how the justice system works in our country, to see how a courtroom works and to take part in a mock trial to explore the structure of a criminal trial. The children were all given roles to play such as the judge, clerk, witnesses, barristers, solicitors and jury. They reenacted a real case about children involved in harassment and cyberbullying. They learned a lot about careers in law with many of the children liking the idea of working in a courtroom.

In school, the children have been continuing with their Amazon projects in English and humanities, which has seen them working on their research skills this week. A worthy link to Internet Safety Week, which has unfolded in the background of their learning in many subjects, with this year’s theme of Too good to be true enabling the children to explore next steps if they come across a bogus website or a scam when online. Volume was the topic in maths lessons, where the children found the volume of 3D shapes both through the use of formulas and practically, by dunking them in water to see how much had been displaced.

A final well done must go to the school chess team, which features several of our Form 7 children. A dominant display saw them beat Walthamstow Hall this week. Look out for a feature about their season in the school magazine, which will be released at the end of the Spring Term.
