Mindfulness and wellbeing

This week’s topics in Russell Robins were Mental Health and Mindfulness.

We were very lucky this week as we have now secured an extra sensory circuit session in the Russell Hall. The children love nothing more than to explore the equipment independently whilst also copying their classmates. It really is wonderful to watch and observe as the Robins use their bodies in different ways. For example, some children like to walk across the bench and others like to pull themselves along. Whichever they choose, it certainly is always a great workout.

The children all worked together to pack away the shopping during our weekly visit to the pop-up shop in the Old Hall. First, I explained how we should handle the groceries and then I demonstrated how to pack them safely and carefully. Miss Ruby and I were very impressed with the children’s good listening skills and once back in class, they helped to unpack everything.

In Robins, there is a special emphasis on nature and the benefits it has on wellbeing and mental health. It was wonderful to watch a video on the CTouch as part of our topic. The children thoroughly enjoyed watching the Springwatch video and the Robins remained still and calm as they absorbed all the sounds of nature. Whilst on the subject of nature, we have noticed two robins on our bird feeding station. As you know, robins are particularly territorial, so we are hoping these could be a nesting pair and there might be the possibility of baby robins during the nesting season. In addition, we also saw two pigeons and something verrrrrry exciting… long-tailed tits! Perhaps you could also share any nature news in your Home / School Journals. We would love to share it during snack time.

Our Pre-Prep Coffee Morning practise is well underway, as I like to ensure the children feel comfortable and familiar with the activities and also their surroundings (Russell Hall). They have all worked very hard, so fingers crossed for the day.

This week’s cooking activities consisted of bread rolls, sandwiches and pizza. The children each enjoyed collecting rosemary for their toppings. We made a delivery to Mrs Tickner, Mrs Parker and Mr McCarthy. They were all thrilled with their pizza and said they would have it for their afternoon snack.

Recently, the children have been interested in Paw Patrol. There were lots of smiles when I introduced the Mighty Pups activity. Miss Ruby and I were super impressed with all the good sharing.

It was lovely to explore the spring sun on Wednesday afternoon. We ventured around the school grounds before stopping at the Pirate Ship to sail the Seven Seas. Afterwards, we gathered on the bench and enjoyed a yummy picnic, followed by a warming hot chocolate. We also had some sports entertainment as we watched the netball match between Russell House and St Michael’s.

The Robins enjoyed lots of physical fun in the Long Garden. The trampoline was certainly very popular, along with the stepping stones. Even myself and Miss Ruby enjoy going down the slide with the children as this creates such wonderful relationships with the children as we also share the children’s interests and experiences.

Continuing with nature, we hosted this week’s Pre-Prep assembly in the Old Hall. Our topic was Our Favourite Things. We enjoyed showing everyone our scrimbling and artwork. All our Pre-Prep friends enjoyed taking part in a garden bird quiz. Finally, we asked everyone to join along and sing The Wheels on the Bus. In true Robins style, we shook our bells and remembered our jazz hands at the end!

One of our favourite activities which makes us all super happy is singing and doing the actions to If You’re Happy and You Know It on the CTouch. This song makes us happy and lifts everyone’s mood. We are certainly a happy class which loves having fun and making special memories.

Next week’s topic is Kindness Week and Valentine’s Day. We have lots of fun activities planned which include lots of cooking and arts and crafts. Perhaps your child might like to bring in something from home linked to our topic.
