Natural collages

We've kicked off this half term by taking part in Environment Awareness Week with our story of the week, The Lorax. So far, the children have all really enjoyed this book, remembered lots of aspects and characters and have started to be able to recognise the impact of our actions on the environment.

We have explored the school environment and collected little pieces of nature. We took these back to the classroom and have created our own natural collages. This activity supported the children's physical development through using scissors and spreading glue, as well as provided them with greater knowledge and understanding of the world.

During this activity, we made an amazing discovery... there was a stag beetle in our garden! The children enjoyed looking at his large pincers but were very careful and quiet so as to not scare him. We helped him back onto his feet and put him somewhere safe.

The Nursery class also spotted lots of tree stumps on our walk, so they stood on them pretending to be the Lorax and trees themselves!

We have also read The Snail and the Whale this week, which has allowed the children to learn about different types of environments around the world and we spoke at length about how we can help all the ocean life. Later on, the children used water to transport the toy animals who were stuck on the beach, down the pipes and back into the ocean.

As a project for this week and next week, we are also making our own paper. So far, we have worked together to rip all of our old scrap paper that was in our recycling bin into tiny little pieces and have left them to soak in water. This has supported learning and understanding around recycling and reusing waste.

The children have practised their cutting skills again when sorting actions into what is good for the earth and what is bad for the earth, looking at things like turning the lights and taps off, growing plants and walking or cycling instead of going in a car, to name a few.

Next week we are continuing to learn about how to help our environment and being great planet protectors. We will also be going on our trip to Otford Library on Tuesday, and celebrating French Day on Thursday!
