Natural surroundings
13 Jun 2025Form 5 had a fantastic day out on their science trip to Sevenoaks Nature Reserve.
The focus of the visit was learning about habitats and plants, and the children were excited to explore the natural surroundings. They began the day with a walk around the reserve, looking closely at different types of habitats and discussing how plants and animals are suited to where they live.
One of the highlights was pond dipping, where the children discovered all sorts of tiny creatures living in the water. They also tried river dipping and found an equally fascinating range of wildlife. The children worked in small groups, using nets and trays to carefully observe what they had caught, identifying species and thinking about how these animals survive in their environment.

It was a brilliant opportunity to connect with nature and develop their understanding of ecosystems and biodiversity. Here is what some of Form 5 had to say about the trip:
On our trip to Sevenoaks Nature Reserve, we first got in a circle and then we had to name a plant starting with the letter of our name. After that, we had to name parts of a flower. We also had to go around and find the colour of plants. After lunch, we went to the pond to start pond dipping. Then we moved on to the river before we packed up and went home. It was a great trip!

The trip was amazing! We had so much fun. We looked at lots of interesting animals and plants. We also went in the river and the pond. I learned so many fun facts, like; woodlice can live in compost and they are called detritivores.
