On the farm
20 Mar 2026This week’s topics in Russell Robins were Baby Animals, On the Farm and Oral Health.
The week started with a visit to the Russell Hall to watch Form 4 and Form 5’s play rehearsals. Everyone enjoyed watching the performances and the Robins sat very nicely and some of the children wiggled to the music and clapped their hands.
On our way back, we collected our shopping from the Old Hall and carried the big shopping bags back to class. The children helped Miss Ruby unpack the groceries and prepare the ingredients for our cake.
This week’s cooking activities consisted of banana cake, On the Farm biscuits, cheese sandwiches and cheesy mashed potato. The children enjoyed mixing, spreading, weighing, counting, mashing and sprinkling. Cooking involves many skills and it is great to see how much the children’s confidence and perseverance has increased since taking part in our daily cookery sessions.
Thank you for such wonderful parental support again this week. As a result, we have enjoyed sharing the children’s Show and Tell objects from home. One of our Robins brought in a book based on oral health and she enjoyed showing her classmates during carpet time. We also spoke about how many minutes we should brush our teeth in the morning and at night.
We visited the school field to see the sheep, in the hope of spotting some spring lambs. However, there were no lambs but we did enjoy rolling down the grassy banks. Mr Trigger was very kind and let us explore his weaving circuit. The Robins watched my demonstration before attempting it themselves. They also showed the older children and they all gave the Robins a big clap.
During our Talk for Learning, I showed the children some farm animals and they were able to identify the name of some baby animals. They learnt that a baby donkey is called a foal, a baby cow is a calf, a baby goose is a gosling and many more.
This week we have been focusing more on the children’s interests and providing them with many opportunities to experience rolling down hills, enjoying picnics on the school field whilst watching the tractor in the nearby field. The Pirate Ship is a fond favourite and on Wednesday they gathered around the edge whilst listening to the instructions from the mummies of the RHPA. Prior to this, we watched a video on the CTouch about the Easter Bunny which showed the children how he hides the eggs for them to find. After the Robins listened to the instructions, the Robins set off with their baskets to collect eggs and chicks. Once collected, the children traded in their finds for a chocolate egg!! EGG-cellent fun!!
The children have continued to fill little plastic eggs with purple sand and they thoroughly enjoyed finding some baby animals hidden inside.
Next week’s topic is Easter and we have lots of fun activities planned which I’m sure will be enjoyed by all. We encourage children to bring in something from home (just not too big please). This can be related to our weekly topic or anything else they would like to share or celebrate with us. The children enjoy sharing their objects from home during carpet time and it is a fantastic way to build effective communication and listening skills.
This will be the last bulletin of the Spring Term and therefore, time to say goodbye to some of our Robins as they fledge their nest and flyover to Nursery for many more adventures. One of our Robins will also be leaving Russell House to start a new life overseas. We wish the family luck on their journey and we look forward to sharing their news once settled.
Happy Easter to all. ![]()
