Our super week
16 Jan 2026We started our super week off with a circle time, thinking about our favourite superheroes and what they do. We thought of heroes that were fast and strong, but we also realised that heroes are kind and helpful and they keep us safe.
The children then thought of some super real-life heroes that help to keep them safe, including the police, doctors, firefighters and paramedics. They also realised that our family members can be superheroes too as they look after us, keep us safe and rescue us when we need help. After circle time, the children worked hard to draw some fantastic pictures of their own real-life superheroes which look fantastic on our display.
During literacy, we read Supertato! which the children were very excited about. They were fantastic at predicting what was going to happen next and they thought up lots of different ways that we could rescue Supertato from the freezer after Evil Pea pushed him inside. During their play, the children loved re-enacting the story in the small world area, rescuing the vegetables and trapping all the Evil Peas in jail.
We practised our fine motor skills too as we used tweezers to catch some of the escapeas and the children became real-life superheroes as they worked together in junk modelling to build an ambulance to rescue the squashed peas.
We have also had lots of fun rescuing the frozen dinosaurs in the water area, creating our own superhero characters out of playdough, and designing our own capes and hero masks to disguise ourselves.
Our maths focus this week has been forming our numbers. Mrs Nelson helped us to carefully count the correct number of each character from our story Supertato, then we had to spot the correct numeral to match on the numberline. After we worked out which number we needed, we each had a go at writing the number on our whiteboards. The children were fantastic at counting carefully, touching each picture as they counted and everyone had a super go at forming their numbers. Some of the children continued to practice their number skills in their play, and some even had a go at writing numbers to 20! Transition really are becoming maths superstars !
In phonics this week, we practised identifying the number of syllables in each of our favourite superheroes by clapping as we spoke the words. Some of these were a bit tricky, but we kept trying and worked together.
Our older children learned the letter sound n this week and used our sound basket to come up with lots of words beginning with the sound n including nappy, knight and nest. The younger children practised using their body to create percussion sounds and patterns, listening to the different sounds they could make.
On Friday, when we arrived at school, the Evil Peas had broken out of jail, and had escaped all over the classroom! We had to work together as a team to catch them all and put them back in jail. To make sure they couldn’t escape again, we used our forks and mashers to press and squash all the peas into lots of pieces, using our strong muscles.
This week the children amazed me with their confidence and bravery as it was our turn to do assembly. Transition stood up in front of their Pre-Prep friends and taught them all about being brave. After reading a special story, the children each showed a picture they had drawn about a time they were a bit scared to do something, but still had a go and they explained to their friends how it made them feel. We finished off with a lovely song all about being brave. Well done Transition!
We have done some super learning this week! I am so impressed with how smoothly the children have settled back into school after the Christmas holiday and I’m looking forward to another week as we begin our topic Healthy Me.
