Pancakes and wildlife
07 Mar 2025This week’s topics in Russell Robins were Pancake Day, Book Week and Wildlife Day.
We started the week meeting our new Russell Robin which will join us next week. All our existing children were very kind and shared all the resources during his Settling in session. Our cosy, nurturing class certainly is the most wonderful environment for little ones as they start their Russell House journey.
We’ve explored many sensory activities and it appeared their favourite was the porridge oats which linked to Goldilocks and the Three Bears as part of Book Week. Although, at the end of the session, there were more oats on the floor than in the sensory tray! The children had lots of fun using the antique shiny spoons to fill different-sized containers. It was great to hear lots of mathematical language being used and they also made connections to their favourite breakfasts.
Continuing with sensory activities, the Robins also explored lentils and rice. Lots of fun was had, exploring colour, texture and sound.
There was a special treat on Tuesday…you’ve guessed it, PANCAKES!! The Robins enjoyed spreading their chosen toppings and then most importantly…they loved tasting them. Even myself and Miss Ruby enjoyed some pancakes with the children. It’s all about enjoying and sharing the same experiences with the children and this is what helps children to make secure relationships with their teachers.
The children discovered some cheeky dinosaurs in class but they were no ordinary dinosaurs, as they were wearing…PANTS! Continuing with the book theme, something had escaped from the freezer. Something green, round and looking for trouble. Yes, it was the EVIL PEA!! Fortunately, all the children used their super strength to capture him and put him back into the ice depths of the freezer…yay!
This week’s cooking activities consisted of cinnamon iced fingers, jam/ honey sandwiches, a giant cookie and cheese scones. As always, we took our baking creations to Mrs Tickner, Mrs Parker and Mr McCarthy and they were all thrilled with their tasty treats.
The sun has been shining and there was no better way to make the most of the glorious weather, than an afternoon picnic in the front garden. Sometimes, the simplest of things can be the most fun. Each Robin carried their own picnic plate outside and sat down on our mat. Miss Ruby managed to take a photo/ selfie of us all having a lovely time, making fun memories together.
The rice sensory tray has been replaced with sand. There were lots of numbers hiding in the sand and some of the children were able to identify them.
It was lovely to see all the children’s costumes and we managed to take a group photo on our garden bench. We also gathered outside our class for a Pre-Prep group photo. The flowers looked beautiful in the background and there were certainly lots of beautiful colours.
Following the children’s interests of weighing and collecting objects from the home corner, they were super excited on Thursday when there was a shop role-play area for them to explore. There was lots of weighing and shopping and they enjoyed looking at the numbers on the antique scales.
Next week’s topic is Science Week and we have lots of fun activities planned and also some experiments. Your child is welcome to bring in something from home linked to our topic or their interests (bookbag size). They will have the opportunity to share these during Show and Tell.
